In Philadelphia last night, an Amtrak train with seven cars jumped the rails and went flying off the tracks, causing great commotion that was documented real-time through social media. The crash left 6 people dead and one hundred and forty people injured. On twitter, one can see the development of the crash from the first documented tweet about the crash saying "On the Amtrak train that crashed. Pray for this injured." Other tweets documented its development like "Loud crash. Smoke filled the train. People that were able to walk found an exit to get out of." and "Massive crime scene. Cops just loaded body into van." In addition to several tweets from the both the passengers on the train and onlookers at the scene, many videos were posted on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

I could talk about the Amtrak train crash, but I would prefer to talk about the development of social media as a vital tool when it comes to transparency. Due to the development of social media, the people have more power to end cover-ups and hidden truths in order to search for a more open atmosphere in the US, upholding the 1st amendment and knocking down incidents like the Watergate Scandal.
