'Elder Orphans' of the Baby Boom Generation - Lindsey Galvan p.4

"Elder Orphans" is a condition described as when seniors are single or widowed; they have no children, at least in the area, and no support system. Nearly one-quarter of Americans 65 and older are "elder orphans" with no family to help care for them. This is becoming a national issue because there are not enough nursing homes and facilities to care for the growing number of seniors who are on their own.

I found this interesting because I never noticed that the elder generation now is the baby boom generation. These people are important to our history and it's sad to see them abandoned and neglected by their own families.

  1. Americans need to really begin to respect their elders as other cultures do. This story makes me very sad.
