Change still far off in Albuquerque - Madison Escano

In 2010, an Iraq war veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder was killed by police after he put a gun to his head in a 7-11 parking lot. Kenneth Ellis was one of two dozen killed by New Mexico police in the past five years. Following national outbursts from Ferguson, the Department of Justice sought reform for the city's justice department and wanted to stop a pattern of abusive police behavior. However, after nearly six months, activists allege that reform has not been made.

Police brutality is a serious issue and has reflected itself in various events throughout American and international history. From the Rodney King riots to Ferguson, the country has sought measures against police brutality and sadly it still remains a problem in our society today, especially for POC which is disheartening.

  1. The police academy needs to realize that they have to do something about the situation. The police in general have been becoming more unpopular every time a police brutality case makes the news and the academy needs to realize by now that they should probably fix the way they train incoming officers to avoid this problem.

  2. Yes, officers need reform, they can't just shoot citizens every time they feel threatened. There needs to be tamer action taken or citizens are not being protected.
