Apparently, last week in Salt Lake City, Utah, 30 children of Uintah Elementary were denied their school lunches after a "nutrition manager" came to investigate a large number of negative balances on the students' lunch accounts. The manager seemed to think that because their parents had failed to pay the money owed, the children were suddenly not worthy of basic human necessities and threw away their meals into the trash. Both Utah state Senators promised to get involved if school officials failed to address school policy, with Senator Todd Weiler stating, "I get that the school needs to be paid, but this was bullying." Curiously enough, other schools in different states (Massachusetts, Indiana, Maine and Kentucky) have taken similar actions, perhaps due to their lack of human kindness and general sense of empathy.
Really, who does this? Food should never be denied to a child.
ReplyDeleteThis begs the question of why people feel that they need to resort to such rash actions? Annoyance is a universal feeling and, if one were to let it, it could cause severe anger or unnecessary action, or nonsensical conclusions to be made about someone or something and to even be taken out on innocent people. In this case, this "nutrition manager" felt annoyed at the negative balances in the bank account and felt the need to throw away these children's lunches when notifying the parents or sending a bill to the parents would have been a much more peaceful way of solving the problem.
ReplyDeleteIf there is an issue with the amount of money in the children's accounts, the school should have contacted the parents directly instead of taking away their lunches as a form of punishment.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the child's fault, the parents could of at least gotten a notification first instead of denying a child food!
ReplyDeleteWell that's pretty horrible of him to do to little kids
