A student who went missing while studying abroad was found dead, inside of a railroad tunnel in central Rome. He was John Durkin, an economics major from New Hampshire. He was one of six students who were part of the study abroad program. He had been in Rome a little over a month. Two days before, he went to a bar with a group of friends and never came back. He was a linebacker on his college football team, and seemed to be a good student.
(This is more of an international news article, but since it concerns an American citizen, I think it can still be reviewed.) I have always considered studying abroad, but hearing about stories like this makes me much less eager. Either his death was an accident caused partially by him being intoxicated, or someone murdered him and took advantage of his drunken state. It's also possible that he wasn't intoxicated at the time of his death, and that he just went to the bar to hang out without drinking. We won't know for sure until an autopsy and investigation is performed. However, the Italian police force seems to have a lot of problems and apparent corruption, so something unexpected could definitely happen. It doesn't seem wise to become intoxicated while in another country (or when you're in any unfamiliar place), since you are in a completely different environment, and you really need to have complete control of yourself. Otherwise, you're much more likely to get into an accident, or something worse.
