In the past, Asian carp were used in the southern United States to control algae build-up in sewage treatment plants, but since then they have broken into the Mississippi River system and are now creeping north to the Great Lakes, destroying local fish populations as they go. They often leap out of the water in an attempt to inflict heavy human casualties as well, going so far as to hit local environmental campaigner, Michael Beecham, in the face while he was out studying them. The US Army Corps of Engineers has put forward several plans to deal with the menacing fish, including one that involves blocking Chicago's canal system and taking over 20 years to complete. Another option, which was much cheaper and, of course, not proposed by the Corps of Engineers, is to turn the fish into a highly demanded food source and eat the animal into extinction, something humans are extremely good at. One man has already sprung into action and is currently selling carp burgers at his fish shop in Chicago, saying that, "Eating them helps solve the problem and also provides jobs." Whatever the solution we devise to combat these roaming gangs of heinous fish, one can only hope it wipes them out completely, as there is apparently only room for one invasive species on this planet.
