"Obama: religious freedom 'under threat'," Carson Wright, 5th Period

President Obama recently stated that "around the world, freedom of religion is under threat." The president also stated Thursday that he is looking forward to meeting "his holiness, Pope Francis." Obama noted that the pope, "like (the Apostle) Matthew," has "answered the call of Jesus, who said 'follow me'," by virtue of his stance on inequality. He and congressional Democrats have been focusing on the issue of income inequality as of late, which falls in line with Pope Francis's current interests. The president's remarks focused on threats to religious freedom in China, Egypt, Sudan and elsewhere.

A very brief article, but important for a number of reasons.
One being that our president is one who has acknowledged the importance of religious freedom for all peoples. That may seem like old news, but based on the platforms of some parties, it is important.
Another being that our president feels free to express, ostensibly, at least, his own religion. I admit, his words regarding Jesus gave me pause; such is so when I hear any elected official express their faith in such favorable fashion. I prefer my government secular; however, these were personal, faith-based comments, and I'm glad President Obama felt free to say them.
As well, Pope Francis and all he stands for represents a marvelous advancement in one of the most traditional and conservative organizations in the world. I'm glad we've two leaders--a president and a pope--to guide us towards tolerance.

  1. I think people should have freedom of religion for everyone. America is known as the country to be free and start a new life if under harsh rule by your other country.
