Michael Sam, 24-year-old former University of Missouri athlete revealed his sexuality on Sunday.
Mrs Obama took to Twitter to call Sam "an inspiration to all of us".
The National Football League has also welcomed the defensive lineman's announcement, saying Sam has "honesty and courage".
Mrs Obama said of Sam: "We couldn't be prouder of your courage both on and off the field."

I think this is great! Mrs. Obama is setting an amazing example for the rest of the country, supporting this man and his reveal. I don't think people realize just how influential she is and when she takes to social media to praise someone, you know it's a big deal. I am so looking forward to when everyone is behind her and Michael Sam and understands that this takes guts and that his teammates and coach have accepted him, so why can't we?
