A zoo in Copenhagen euthanized a healthy two year old giraffe on Sunday February 9,2014 . The zoo claims that they killed this giraffe, Marius, to avoid inbreeding. Marius was "dismembered in front of a zoo audience that included children, and fed to the zoo's lions" Although thousands of people signed an online petition to save this young animal, the Danish capital said they had no place in the herd for this giraffe. They killed the giraffe with a bolt gun, used part of the carcass for research and fed the other part to the carnivores of the zoo. They fed this giraffe to the lions so that they would waste "200 kilograms of meat." Lots of people came to the viewing of the autopsy and it is said they let people watch for educational purposes only. The zoo says that this euthanizing of the poor animal was necessary for the health of the population for the future.
I don't like this story one bit. I hate that they would just kill this giraffe in front of a bunch of people just to educate them. I think that they could've handled this in a better manner. He was young and healthy so I think they could have at least given him to a different zoo. I love animals and I just think this is cruel.
I can't believe they killed the giraffe in front of a huge crowd that had children in it! While it is extremely sad that they killed it, the least they could've done is block off the giraffe enclosure so it wouldn't have been open to the public at the time.
ReplyDeleteThis is not the kind of education parents take their kids to the zoo to get... This is just sick.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness this doesnt sound educational at all but traumatizing, I hope the people and children who saw this are okay!
