Michael Mapes, a New York- based artist, uses details of people's lives to create portraits of people. For example he might use locks of hair, jewelry, photos, samples of handwriting, etc. He describes these pieces as "biographical DNA" which is closely related to the portrait he is working on, taking the art to a personal level. By collecting hundreds of little pieces of "DNA" he arranges several different versions before actually making the piece final using test tubes, little baggies, and push pins. Mapes says "My hope is that it encourages different ways of processing and interpreting what and how we look at things—art, science or anything. "  By approaching this scientific method to art, Mapes was able to achieve a truly unique series of  'paintings'.
