This article essentially describes the recent efforts of a Missouri lawmaker to make the teaching of evolution optional. He justifies this by claiming children who preach creationism as opposed to darwinism are prone to ridicule and may feel alienated due to their beliefs. This is his third attempt to place restrictions on teaching evolution in schools. There is a lot of controversy associated with this, proponents claim that they should have the right to monitor what their children lean, specifically if it directly opposes their beliefs. Other, feel that both sides should be proposed and find the bill to be grossly unnecessary. Though what is most shocking about this issue is the amount of people who are uninformed. Two teens were asked their opinion of the bill and they claimed they had never been taught about the concept. One asked what evolution was, while the other responded that it was whether or not God was real. After being informed, they decided students should be given the option to learn what they want instead of just letting parent mandate what is allowed in the classroom. As of now it is not a requirement to teach evolution in schools, and four states have anti darwinist laws in their legislation.
This is probably the most ridiculous thing I have heard in a long time. To begin with, there in an explicit separation between church and state in the United States constitution, taking away the government's right force religious ideals upon kids. Students shouldn't be preached at when they are supposed to be learning. Furthermore, laws like this deny a fundamental right to education and intellectual development, continuing a cycle of ignorant, uninformed generations. Those opposed argue that teaching evolution offers a very narrow view of the world, but the hypocrisy in that idea is so blatantly obvious, it hardly warrants a lengthy rebuttal. Darwinism is a scientifically proven philosophy that is in essence the basis of all creation and deserves to be taught in schools. These lawmakers need to stop inflicting their personal ideals onto younger generations and leave their philosophies in favor of fact, at least in the classroom.
