Madison Ceurter 5th period: Like a modern Cupid, inspector tests flowers to your Valentine
On Valentine's Day there is always flowers, but have you ever thought about where the flowers come from?  They come from Mexico and Latin America.  There are people that have to inspect these flowers to make sure there are no bad flowers.  They do this by taking a sample of the flowers and examining them.  They are looking for insects and pests because those flowers could ruin America's soil or wipe out the flower industries.  There were 1,715 pests found last year, which is crazy and shows how carefully people have to inspect the flowers.  The flowers are shipped by truck and when the truckers get to America the inspectors have to make sure the flowers are good.  If they aren't good then the truckers have to go back to Mexico and get them cleaned and ready for Valentine's Day.  This is kind of gross to think about.  What if your valentine got you flowers and there were insects on one of the leaves, I would be pretty grossed out and I wouldn't want the flower anymore.  I never thought about the process of inspecting the flowers for pests or insects, this article was very interesting and I enjoyed it.

This shows how much thought has to go into things that we see as everyday tasks. If this kind of thinking and precautionary actions were not taking, people would be exposed to a multitude of dangers beyond flees in flowers. Thinking in this way makes the world a safer and better place.
