Gloria Jones: Ending Rape on Campus

Ending rape on campus has become an increasingly prevalent issue. For several reasons, college years are some of the most vulnerable and most likely times for students to become the victims of rape. This article tells several stories of how the schools have mishandled, or essentially ignored, the field complaints of women who had face rape or sexual assault.
I think it is imperative for colleges to take a step forward and make it easier for rape survivors to file the case and prosecute the rapist if found guilty. In one case the university only spoke to the man accused and tried to work out a plan to make it easiest on him. It is ridiculous, even outside college life, how few rape cases are reported and out of those, how many are taken seriously. I've read that approximately 15 out of 16 rapists walk free and will never spend a day in jail. That is absolutely appalling. Hopefully the colleges will make a decision to revise their process in dealing with sexual assault.

  1. Rapists need to be prosecuted. Point blank. Whatever actions need to be taken to put rapists in jail must be taken. I'm glad colleges are finally realizing that.

  2. If we could shift the blame from the victims to the actual criminals, rape and those who perpetrate it would suffer a justly decimating blow. But some traditional stigma prevents us from accessing the reality of the crime; I hope the tables turn soon.

  3. It's so outrageous how the victims are blamed, and some of the testimonies of rape victims that I've come across are appalling. The fact that rapists can walk free, without anyone even shaming them for what they did, makes my skin crawl.

  4. It's unfair, untrue and absurd that girls would be blamed in any way for the crimes committed against them. I'm glad that colleges have recognized the issue, but I'm more interested in what they're going to do to try and prevent and educate people in order to lessen how often this act occurs.
