A 4.1 magnitude earthquake struck Friday night in west-central South Carolina. It was the strongest to hit South Carolina since 2002. The quake was centered 7 miles west-northwest of Edgefield, which is about 25 miles north of Augusta, Georgia, and 60 miles southwest of Columbia, South Carolina. The town of Edgefield has around 4,750 residents. The estimated depth of the earthquake was 3 miles and had an estimated magnitude of 4.4. There were no reports of damage or injuries tied to the tremor. Still, the quake was big enough to be felt as far away as metropolitan Atlanta some 160 miles west. South Caroline does have a lot of earthquakes, but most of them are minor. Friday's earthquake was actually the 13th earthquake in South Carolina in the past 12 months.
I have never been in an earthquake and I hope that I will never be in an earthquake *fingers crossed* But in reality, from this article I read, I don't think any deaths/serious injuries were involved so that's always good. It was surprising to find out that there are actually a lot of quakes in South Carolina...of course when I think of earthquakes I always think of California. But anyways, just a 'normal' earthquake story for ya!
