U.S. & Britain seek Yemen Cease-Fire as relations with Saudis cool. -Angelia Perez

U.S. & Britain seek Yemen Cease-Fire as Relations with Saudis Cool.

The U.S., Britain, and Saudis Arabia's largest arms supplier are now coming forward for a cease-fire in the Yemen war, world's worst man made humanitarian disaster. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, British Counterpart, & Defense Secretary Jim Mattis all on different nights came as criticism  of Saudi Arabia bursted over bombing campaign in Yemen and the killing of Jamal Khashoggi. The Saudi bombings have been major especially since it was civilian death. Mr. Pompeo quoted " It is time to end this conflict, replace conflict with compromise, and allow the Yemeni people to heal through peace and reconstruction."

Analysis

This shows that society's humanity isn't improving and that innocent lives are more at risk everyday and each time this continues. We all wish writing about it would help this cause and that people would listen to us. I can't really relate this back to anything but i hope that in the future that nothing has to relate back to this

Synagogue shooting -Angelia Perez

Synagogue Shooting

Suspect Robert Bower is in jail due to the shooting in a Synagogue. Bower left 11 people dead and many injured. Luckily no children were hurt in this event. Bowers entered the The Tree of Life synagogue heavily armed and started shouting anti-semitic epithets and started shooting. A few people were hurt with life threatening injuries  and 3 out of 4 police were hurt with non life threatening injuries. Based on Bowers social media he had hate messages for jews. Bowers was armed with an AR-15 rifle and three hand guns. Bowers was injured by gunfire by authorities are unable to figure out if it was self-inflicted or not. This event is one of the most deadliest jew attacks in U.S history.

Analysis

This event leads back the Charleston Church shooting where 21 year old white supremacist murdered 9 African Americans including the Senior Pastor. This also shows that even the places we feel the most safe in can also be put in danger just easily.

Synagogue shooting shatters sense of safety- Paige Aleman

Attack on Jews in the U.S. leaving eleven killed; became to the deadliest attack on jews in united states history.

The attack on saturday shattered the sense of peace and safety in Squirrel Hill. Jews had to relive the horrors of the Holocaust live the brutality, murder, and destruction of their religion (ex. synagogues) which may be some of their familys reasons for coming to the united states in the first place; to escape all of that.

Trump sending 5,200 Troops to border -Paige Aleman

By the end of this week more than 5,000 active-duty military troops will deploy to the Southern border.  On Monday Defense Department officials said that an escalation of a midterm election show a force against caravan of Central American migrants that Trump has characterized as an "invasion of our country."

everybody is technically an immigrant in the U.S. it really just depends on when you got here why should anybody else be treated different.

No change by Kennedy Morrison

Still No Change

This article talks about how a hate crime towards Matthew Shepard, 20 years ago leading to his death, is still significant to many. 21 year old Matthew Shepard, who was gay, was robbed, pistol-whipped, tied to a fence, and was left in the freezing cold overnight. He had later died in the hospital.
His death attracted attention from the LGBT.Two decades after Matthew Shepard's death, 20 states still don't consider attacks on LGBT people as hate crimes. This can be connected with the KKK and how they carried out hate crimes and it wasn't that big of a deal to people. It shows how much people really care about the minority or the different person.

McDonald's Hero

A father who was armed had just possibly stopped a shooting in a Mc Donald's restaurant. As the father was leaving the restaurant with his two sons, a masked man walked into the Mc Donald's and began shooting. The father returned shots at the masked man leading to the father and one of his sons being shot, as well as the masked man who died from his injuries. The father and son's injuries were not life threatening and they made it out fine. The historical context in this is mainly about the second amendment and how it is a controversial topic. How it could be good and bad. Some would say if guns were banned this would've never happened, but guns are traded on the black market all the time.Other arguments would say because of this amendment the father saved the day.-Khai

Trump and His Border Problem

Trump is sending down many of his troops to the southern border. Trump has added that the migrants that are coming into the states are an "invasion of our country." In other words, Trump thinks the immigrants who are coming in are invading the country and taking our jobs.People disagree with Trump by saying that bringing troops to our borders shows weakness not strength. Also that 5,000 men won't bring immigration to a halt. In the past there has always been problems with immigration. I feel that sending troops to the border won't help because as stated in the article, it wont stop a thing. Also i feel that this is something secondary that our millitary needs to worry about.-Khai

Violet Wiedemer- President Trump challenges the 14th amendment

Most recently, President Trump has vowed to destroy the 14th amendment, which protects the rights and citizenship of those born on American soil, but not of "American" parents. He called the amendment "ridiculous" and vowed to bring it down.

The amendment was first put in place to protect the rights of the children of freed slaves, guaranteeing their citizenship. If Trump somehow manages to accomplish this, he is overstepping Presidential limits within the constitution, and borders on tyrannical.

Google Employees Walkout Over Bad Handling of Sexual Misconduct- Gabriel Allen

Google employees plan walkout over executives' handling of sexual misconduct

Google employees are planning a walkout to protest how the company has dealt with executives accused of sexual misconduct. This all started when the New York Times published an article talking about how two Google executives were given exit packages worth tens of millions of dollars after leaving the company following sexual misconduct allegations and a third executive that was allowed to stay at the company. Google is saying that they take the personal safety of their employees ever seriously and that they take every sexual misconduct report review it and act accordingly.

I feel like it's huge that information like this getting out now. It's awful to hear that Google has been giving out large severance packages to executives who were accused of sexual misconduct. I definitely think that the employees walking out to protest the situation is a smart safe way to make changes happen.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Releases and Is Exactly What People Expected

Red Dead Redemption 2, a game centered around open world horseback riding game centered around the adventurous life of a cowboy. It's predecessor, Red Dead 1, was beyond critically acclaimed for its time, so the hopes for this one were pretty high, and it proved to deliver. Red Dead 2 is in the top spots of best games of 2018, if not the best. The amazingly replayable and expansive outlooks from the first installment were expanded upon accompanied by a heartening story about the reality of the cowboy lifestyle.
Of the games competition, that being Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, Fallout 76, and Battlefield 5, it is proving to be standing its ground against these big Triple A titles. Of these, Black Ops 4 has released and has proved to satisfy its playerbase, if not completely winning them over with the new revitalized way to look at an arcade shooter. So far, Red Dead has looked at the game critics saying that story elements bring down a Triple A game title and completely blown them away with its surprisingly well meshed story and gameplay and proves to be a title worshiped for years to come.

PewDiePie is in Danger of Being De-Throned from YouTube

After a lot of debating, I have now realized that this moment will be a critical historical moment in History. PewDiePie, who has held the prestigious title of #1 most subscribed channel of YouTube is going to lose his crown to T - Series, a mysterious YouTube channel that appeared out of nowhere and gained subscribers more than anyone in the History of the site With PewDiePie, currently sitting at 68, 575, 240 subscribers, and T-Series close behind at 67,900,000 subscribers and with how rapidly T-Series has been gaining, its only a matter of time...
So, why is T-Series gaining so many subscribers? They are a music channel, and there content isn't really that desirable, especially to deserve the crown of most subscribed. Apparently, the reason that T-Series has so many subscribers is that everyone in India that buys a phone that has YouTube auto installed on it is automatically subscribed to T-Series. So, while unfair to PewDiePie, is out of our hands due to contracts with YouTube. However, PewDiePie will always be #1 in our hearts, despite the inevitable slowly closing in.

Pittsburgh Synagogue Shooting- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/27/us/jewish-hate-crimes-fbi/index.html

Summary:

This weekend, another mass shooting has occurred at a synagogue in the city of Pittsburgh. It is considered to be the deadliest attacks towards the jewish community in the history of the United States. The attack occurred during worship on a Sabbath morning and the shooter opened fire and killed 11 people.

Analysis:
This article was posted on the day the shooting had occurred and was continuously updated up until the next day. I had no prior knowledge to this event at all and it shocks and disgusts me how the hate crimes towards different people based on their beliefs are still occurring and keep getting worse. There are also no signs of improvement on gun control laws that i know of. I fear that as a nation, we are just letting history repeat itself for the worst.
Whitey Bulgur Killed A Day After Prison Transfer- adriana chavez

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/30/us/james-whitey-bulger-killed/index.html

Summary:
One of America's most infamous criminals was recently killed a day after he was transferred to a higher security prison. "Whitey" was sentenced to a double life sentence plus five years for the 31 counts of crimes. These include money laundering, drug dealing, illegal weapon possessions, and being culpable for 11 murders. Most of the public seem to be content with his death, with comments such as "he shouldnt have lived as long as he should have."

Analysis:

This article was written this morning on October 30, 2018 which is very up to date on the information being released. I had absolutely no prior knowledge about anything this article covers. However, after reading it I feel somewhat informed about who James Bulgar was and his story as one of America's most infamous criminals. I can connect this topic to the deaths of other major criminals, or bad influential people to history, such as Hitler, Santa Anna, etc. I can connect this to those people in history because even though all of these people were hated by most of the public, and were wished to be dead already, they still get a lot of recognition even if it is bad.

Trump claims he can end birthright citizenship

President Trump offered a dramatic promise during a new interview to unilaterally end birthright citizenship,Ratcheting his hardline immigration rhetoric with a week to go before critical midterm elections.
I became a citizen in the 7th grade,my little brothers and all of my cousins were born here,if Trump were to take away birthright citizenship it would make things harder for not just them, but alot of classmates and people around  U.S who's relatives came from a foreign country.

Jordan Body | Names of Dead, Possible Motive to Be Released in Mass Shooting at Pittsburgh Synagogue

On the morning of Saturday October 27, Robert Bowers opened fire at the Tree of Life  synagogue killing eleven in an attempted hate crime. Bowers made several anti-Semitic posts on social media prompting the attack on his innocent victims. It has been described as " the deadliest attack on Jewish community in the history of the United States" resulting in widespread attention from just about all-over the world. As a follow up Bowers has been convicted and has up to twenty-nine charges as he awaits trial.
Unfortunately things of this nature are not a rare occurrence. In recent years there have been several instances of shootings at places of worship. It saddens me to  constantly see shootings and tragic events that spurn our nation almost as if nothing has changed within the last century.

Pharrell Williams sends legal warning to trump- Paige Aleman

Pharrell Williams sent a legal warning to Donald Trump after his song, "Happy", was played at the presidents political event in Indiana, just hours after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. Williams's attorney Howard King wrote to Trump in the cease-and-desist letter wrote that " Pharrell Williams is the owner of the copyright in 'Happy', with the exclusive right to exploit same. Pharrell has not, and will not, grant you permission to publicly perform or otherwise broadcast or disseminate any of his music."

Trump's political event on Saturday in Indiana, just hours after the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting. For some reason Trump deemed it fitting to play the song 'Happy' after the mass murder of 11 people at the hands of a deranged 'nationalist'. I don't remember mass murder ever being a happy subject; this should be a time of mourning the lives of the people who just lost their lives to one of his (Trumps) 'followers'.

Maria Golici - Halloween warnings

Halloween is around the corner and even though the night is always imagined as a blast there are a few things you should keep in mind before heading out to the trick or treat fun. Halloween is the second biggest commercialized holiday for the year so your nicely decorated house is a perfect target. The count crime for Halloween is 50% higher then it is any time around the year. So here are some tips to stay and keep your belongs and yourself safe. Always have your house look preoccupied so if you have to leave the lights on or the tv running while you are out this can prevent to the risk of a break in. If you can try to park your car in a garage because there is a high risk if your car is parked on the street it could get egged, dented or scratched. Lastly, all things that can be rolled away or picked up and thrown probably should be put away for the night.

This article was written October 29, 2018, at 4:08 PM. Halloween has lately been more and more taken out of hand. I don't think Halloween is fun anymore because of the constant fears brought upon by the people who don't think about their actions. As a big sister, I don't find it funny or amusing scaring little kids or egging cars or even teepeeing houses. Halloween needs to brought back to the fun holiday it used to where all kids could think about for weeks is bags full of candy and their pirate or princess costumes

Karsyn Kelly- 9th child dies after adenovirus outbreak at New Jersey facility

The state health department stated that nine young children were reported dead at a New Jersey nursing home in the past week. 8 from viruses that cause respiratory illness. The ninth vitctim was was described as "medically fragile", he later then died on Saturday. The virus of adenovirus are known to remain or unclean surfaces and medical instruments. They also cannot be eliminated by disinfectants. This disease though, is rarely common in people with a very strong immune system. The people who have weak immune systems are at a higher risk of being infected. So far there have been 25 confirmed pediatric adenovirus cases at Wanaque including the nine deaths. These kids who've been affected by thin range from all ages under 18 years old. The outbreak of adenovirus type 7 is affecting medically fragile children with weak immune systems. This disease can be pretty mild for the ones who have strong immune systems to wear the disease acts as a cold and goes away 10 days later. Where as, for the other this disease could possibly turn into pneumonia, then later death.

This article was very informative and I learned a lot. I am heartbroken for the tragedy of the kids death and also for their families. But also, its super important to take care of your body and stay healthy, and making sure to have a sting immune system.

Stay seated -chiamaka

So after the attack on the Jewish people of Pyttsburg , they decided to remember the victims and have Trump postponed his visit to another time, to keep the families at mind. Of the terrible tragedy.

Violence has been embedded into the American culture. It's a sad truth that we all know is true. From how we started takig away this continent, fighting and killing others as well as our “fellow” american. From going to Wally world to buy that rifle to going shopping at Cabellas for whatever other trigger happy people buy. We are blinded to all the blood shed around us. This is a whole sum up for american history. Duels to battles to wars to tombstone and crying wifes and families. Do we ever really learn to stop . I hope we do for the sake of humanity

GRAYSON DECKER Mesquite cop shot unarmed man twice in the back

GRAYSON DECKER Mesquite cop shot unarmed man twice in the back

A former Mesquite police officer Derick Wiley shot an armed man all the way back in 2017 and a police expert testified Friday. The victim was 31 year old Lyndo Jones, who was seriously injured after the incident. According to dashboard camera, we see Jones as a suspect burglar who is asked to get out of his car, with officer Wiley pointing a gun at his truck. Jones testified that he didn't know officer Wiley was an officer because he did not turn on the red and blue lights. The investigation prosecutor Bryan Mitchel says there was no weapon in Jone's truck or in his hand, as well as the fact that Derick Wiley never identified himself as an officer.

Being a police man comes with choices that seem right at the time but the rest of society looks manslaughter. The fact is that we had no clue what its like for policemen like Wiley or what their perspective looks like.

Lily McCollum - Female Candidates Break Barriers, Except When It Comes to Money

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/30/us/politics/women-campaign-fundraising.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

Record breaking numbers of women, especially women of color have been present in the primaries this year. Though women are becoming an even more active part of politics, they are still not receiving as much financial support as their male counter parts, particularly Republican women. Women have to work much harder to raise the same amount of funding as men. Not only do men receive more support, but typically they have the ability to personally fund more of their campaign. Democratic women in predominately Republican areas are also at a steep disadvantage. Even men who are very unlikely to win are out raising the women running against them.

Though it is sad to see women not being funded as much as men, I am glad to see these women getting into politics. The effects of Trump have been, in my opinion, primarily negative, but his presidency has lead to an impassioned political response from women. This is an important article because people need to lend support to female candidates.

Women have been working very hard to gain equal rights to men. It is still an uphill battle, but women are slowly making their way up. In the past century, immense progress has been made. Women gained the right to vote less than 100 years ago. It may seem like a long time, but going from having not even a vote to taking more and more jobs in politics is pretty impressive.

Elle Grinnell- More than 90% of the worlds children breathe toxic air

Around 93% of the worlds children under the age of fifteen have to breathe air that puts their health and development at a large risk. in 2016 around 600,000 kids were estimated to have died from lower respiratory problems which were caused by heavily polluted air. polluted air is now of the leading threats to children health under the age of five, it kills almost one in every 10 deaths within this age group. Children are also easier to be affected by air pollution because they breathe more often and they are also closer to the ground.
This issue reminds me of a year ago in China when the pollution was so bad. The pollution during that time was so bad that apparently you could hardly see through all of the fog. I dont think anyone should have to live with such harsh living conditions. We are basically as developed as the rest of this major cities and our air is no where close to being that polluted. If we are able to help them I think we should do everything in our power in order to aid these people.

Lex Willis- Unarmed man killed by Park Police

Summary:
Motorist Bijan Ghaisar was shot by two Park Police officers in Fairfax County last November. The officers shot nine times at his car when he did not have a weapon in plain sight and they have refused to disclose why they shot at him or if he was armed. The officers reportedly had to smash open Ghaisar's side window to get him out of the car after shooting him. The officers are still on the job and their identities haven't been known by either the FBI or the Park Police. Ghaisar was an accountant who was driving on the George Washington Memorial Parkway a little after 7:30 PM and was rear-ended by an Uber driver. He took off without saying anything and the driver called the police. The officers found Ghaisar and signaled for him to pull over and Ghaisar complied. He then took off twice and the third time, the police stopped in front of him blocking him, and when Ghaisar tried to move around their car, they opened fire.
Analysis:
I found this really upsetting because Ghaisar didn't show any sign of wanting to hurt the police. He only tried to get away, he never reached for anything or rolled down the window. His primary focus was to get out of sight so I think that the police should have never opened fire. You can see in the video clip at 4:28. The link's down below.

John Waddell Tells People About His Experience Being Trapped in a Well- Gabriel Allen

Arizona man who fell into mine shaft describes two days of fighting to stay alive

Earlier this month John Waddell, a man from Arizona, fell into a hundred foot mine shaft and was stuck in there for three days. Today we got to hear his first-hand account of the event. He was talking about how he was climbing fifty feet down into the shaft when out of nowhere his rope snapped causing him to fall another fifty feet, the fall breaking both of his legs. He knew that if he didn't act fast his legs would swell and bleed out so he used sticks that he found at the bottom to fashion a splint. During his two days, he had to fend off multiple rattlesnakes with a stick. After two days someone finally finds him and the rescuers got him out of the shaft. Waddell says that he is very thankful to survive and also that he will be going down the mine again with someone because he says gold while he was down there.

I'm very glad that Waddell ended up being saved from the mine shaft and his story is very scary to hear. But I think that it's so cool that he's not going to let the event stop him from going back to find gold in that mineshaft and I'm glad he's going to bring people with him next time. Hopefully, his injuries heal quickly so that he can get his well-earned gold!

Elle Grinnell- Megyn Kelly's "blackface" comment shows diversity isn't enough

The NBC host Megyn Kelly made an on air comment defending blackface costumes, these comments have been widespread and continued to earn outrage around the country. This incident shows that even with organizations with very diverse teams ignorance is still a large widespread issue. The issue is you not only need teams that are diverse but also teams that are inclusive of everybody. Someone then states that diversity is about representation while inclusion is about engagement. Many people think that they are ok or promote diversity, but then they skim right over peoples background which makes it seem very superficial. Kelly did apologize for her mistake claiming that she understands the value on being sensitive to our history on rave and ethnicity. Instead of going on air from the beginning Kelly could've talked to her people in the work place but instead she made comments that suggested that old white misrepresentation and exploitation of black cultures which is centuries old suddenly becomes excusable in 2018.
All though this situation is no where close to the scenario, a few years ago it was a big issue that college kids were wearing black face as their Halloween costumes. Not only is that very inappropriate but it is also very ignorant and rude. Many people do not know the story behind black face nor do many care, and personally I think some people need to be taught on the subject. People need to start considering others and the back bone of things before they make it into all fun and games.

Siobhan Crummey- Sarah Sanders can't name a Single "Fake news" outlet

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/29/politics/sarah-sanders-fake-news/index.html

On Monday of this week, when Sarah Sanders was asked about the credibility of news outlets in this day and age. Although she dodged the question, she still managed to criticize other news outlets. She says "I'm not going to walk through a list, but they know who they are." First question Sarah Sanders, who's they? And why is it that all of the sudden you've decided to keep quiet when in the past you've had no problem spouting names and news outlets that were giving us "fake news?" sarah Sanders can't name any news outlets that are spouting "fake news" because the whole idea of "fake news" is to cover The Presidents mistakes by flat out denying all claims made against him.

The historical context is that the Trump administration has been doing this since it first came to be, when someone says they doing something wrong, they simply say that person is lying. The audience is the masses, and to inform everyone about what the Trump administration says they're trying to accomplish. The point of view is CNN, so think it means liberal. The is important because if Sarah Sanders and Trump continue to deny that they are doing anything wrong, the problem will just get worse.

Synagogue Shooting Shatters Sense of Safety for Squirrel Hill’s Jewish Residents -Martina D’Orso

This past Saturday, a historic shooting occurred is Pittsburg at the Tree of Life synagogue in Squirrel Hill. Eleven jews were killed, thus making it the deadliest attack on jews in all US History. This has shaken the residents of the neighborhood and has impacted them in multiple ways. They now have been struck with fear, but still are resilient, inclusive, friendly, and supportive of each other in many ways.

This article was written by Kyle Swenson, Gabriel Pogrund, and Kayla Epstein on October 29, 2018 at 8:31 PM. Previously, I had known some information over the shooting, but I had not known about Squirrel Hill as a hub of Jewish residents. This article was written to inform people about the terrible things going onnin our country and how the threats of guns are being handled. We can relate this to the Holocaust because this was a Nazi hate crime. These Jews were being oersecuted for their religion and their beliefs, just like many other jews were in the Holocaust. Although this is relatively small compared to the massive scale in which Jews were murdered duringbthe Holocaust, it still is important especially because of the violation of First Amendment Rights and how it was a hate crime.

Lex Willis- Crash of Boeing 737 MAX Lion Air

Summary:
The Lion Air Jet crashed after taking off from Jakarta, Indonesia with 190 people on board. This incident has a lot of people shocked because of how new and advanced the plane was. The pilot had reportedly radioed to ask to turn back due to air traffic control after taking off. The plane also had technical issues on Sunday; the airspeed reading on the captain's instrument was unreliable and the altitude were different on the caption and first officer's readings. Analyst Gerry Soejatman said that its more common for there to be issues in old aircraft but not newer planes."If it's very new there are sometimes snags that only reveal themselves after they are [used routinely]," he said. "These usually get sorted [within] the first three months." Nobody really knows the exact cause of why the plane crashed just yet.
Analysis:
This reminds me of the plane crash that happened in Cuba in May. Over 100 died but there were three women who survived, though in critical condition. According to industry research, 2017 has been the safest in history for commercial airline travel with no passenger jet crashes.

Elle Grinnell- student dies after shooting at north Carolina high school

A freshman student was charged with murder after he shot a fellow classmate at a North Carolina high school. The shooting in the hallway which started with bullying and spiraled out of control branched of into the murder of a young child. This encounter happened early in the morning before eight o'clock and the sixteen year old thought that a gun was the solution to his problem. No one else was injured in the shooting and the student wanted to Surender shortly afterwards. The school has no metal detectors or searches when walking through the door, students also knew that there could be an altercation.
This news really saddens me because the fact that some kid who is basically my age could kill someone with a gun over a fight is scary. It also shows that just like the other school shootings many of the shooters are students who attend the school. Although this wasn't mass I still think this needs to br brought to the attention of many and people need to start to realize of much of a deal school safety is. Occasions like this are happening way to often, especially when there are many ways for people to fix the situation.

Florida Sen. Bill Nelson compares current US political climate to Rwanda before genocide

Florida sen. bill Nelson compared the current political climate to the African Rwanda before the genocide and it really brought heat to this stuff. His wife who is good friends with Rwanda’s First Lady said that their country like ours is going to tribalism throughout the us politics to a dangerous degree. He is trying to warn the country of what it’s becoming. In my opinion this is a serious matter and fact that should be taken serious because it’s a fact that our country is failing right now . This relates to us history by adding to the fact that back then we had almost the same problems as now and it’s coming back to learn from back theno

Mekinna Knight- Hate Crimes

A recent event has occurred that has a very different mood  than most usual apush blogs. This event, although concurred from a tragedy, was a happy moment in times as dull as now. Last Friday, a priest by  the name of Matthew Shepard who was brutally murdered for being gay, was finally laid to rest at the Washington National Cathedral. He is the first openly gay priest to be consecrated a bishop at the Episcopal church. 20 years ago, a twenty one year old student at the University of Wyoming was robbed, beaten, and hung up on a fence left to die by two guys he met in a bar. Authorities believe that Shepard was attacked  because of his sexual orientation, and consequently led to the jump start of the civil rights movements  for the LGBT community. Many people attended the service to pay their respects to Shepard and all the things he was able to accomplish even after death.

This current event can be most closely related to the passing of the Hate Crime Laws  including the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd jr. Hate Crime Prevention stating that it is illegal an unlawful to physically cause harm to somebody because of their race, color, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability of any person. thanks to Matthew Shepard, it was  the first act to include the prosecution towards hate crimes over gender equality<3

Lily Philips- Homes for the Homeless

In Los Angeles, a new project has started to build small homes in the backyard of homeowners to rent out to people in need that live on the street or in their cars. This helps the homeless find shelter and is a solution to the housing crisis. This is taking effect in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland. Programs are being set up and the cities are looking into paying the homeowners subsidies and money incentives for housing these people. Many people in these cities are interested in being apart of this movement and want to do something to help others. However, there are negative points to this solution such as an issue of privacy on both sides, communication, quality of landlords, and many more. Even though all of these could pose as issues later on, I believe this is good thing and will benefit many people in need. This shows that we as people want to make a difference and do something to help out in our community. I hope we see more efforts like the ones demonstrated in this article in the very near future.

This article was published in The New York Times and was written by Jennifer Medina who focuses on economic recovery, immigration, and education in Southern California. The article was published today, October, 29, 2018, so it is very recent and contains up-to-date information. This movement can be connected to others of its kind such as the tiny houses in Dallas, Portland, and Syracuse built to house homeless or low-income families.  In these housing projects, they built a community of tiny homes all around the country where they can get back on their feet while having a new and decent place to live. The audience of this article  are the people of the United States to inform us of these beneficial program being started. It can also inspire others to help in their communities and cities as well. This article is important to understand that there is always something we can do to help other less fortunate.

Lex Willis- South Dakota inmate executed

Summary:
Fifty-six-year-old Rodney Berget was convicted in 2011 for killing a corrections officer during his attempted escape out of South Dakota State Penitentiary and was later executed Monday afternoon. Berget had been serving time for a life sentence for attempted murder and kidnapping conviction. Rodney also had a brother, Roger, who was executed in 2000, was convicted in 1987 for killing a man to steal his car. The daughter of deceased prison guard Ron RJ Johnson said, "Berget chose to be evil, we chose as a family to be better." Lawyer Juliet Yackel tried to contest Rodney's execution by saying that he is intellectually disabled. However, Rodney sent an affidavit that told Yackel that he wanted to accept his punishment and refused to see Yackel when she tried to visit on October 2nd. Yackel said, "Berget needs to partially redeem himself in the public eye and the minds of his family by accepting his punishment." Rodney also said in 2011, "I knew what I was doing, and I continued to do it. I destroyed a family. I took away a father, a husband, a grandpa."
Analysis:
I think that its hard to know what to feel when you hear something like this because good people do bad things and bad people do good things. Rodney was a bad person but he did a good thing, and by accepting his punishment, he shows respect and and acknowledgment to the people who lost somebody amazing.

Bryn Bohannan- Bomb threats against ex presidents

Summary:
The bomb threats were sent to the Obamas, Clintons, CNN, an millionaire, and many others. Luckily, the ATF, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and explosives, were able to find the bombs in the mail before it got to our ex presidents.
Analysis:
It is crazy to me how there are so many bombs going around the mail these days. It is very scary and I cannot believe this is what our country has become. We can not even open mail at our front door anymore without possibly exploding. I knew about this tragedy before I wrote about it, but I thought this should be something for our youth to talk about so we can protect ourselves and the future.

Youssef Bakr's Commentary on Exclusive Fox News Interview, "McCaskill swipes at Warren, Sanders when asked about 'crazy Democrats'

An unfortunately stunning event has occured in which the incumbent Missouri Democratic Senator, Claire McCaskill, calls out more renowned colleagues, Democratic senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders when asked a question regarding "crazy Democrats." Note that she says she "wouldn't call the two crazy," but makes a point of implying disagreements between them. McCaskill also backed up some of President Trump's "tough talk" on the caravan from Central America whose arrival is imminent. McCaskill also publicly denounced the use of incivility or violence, unlike Hillary Clinton, Corey Booker, Eric Holder or Maxine Waters, who have all called for open harassment or outright assault against right-wingers.

The reason this is schocking to me is because the Democratic party has supported mobs and violence, with almost no one criticizing it. McCaskill's speaking out against her fellow Democrats is virtually unprecedented in recent years.

This reminds me of the Constitutional Convention, in which those with differing ideologies did not resort to violence to try to silence the political adversary.

Elle Grinnell- Synagogue shooting suspect appears in court

On Saturday a gun man killed 11 worshippers in Pittsburgh at a synagogue and he may face the death penalty. This man is facing charges in not only state court but also federal; killing 11 and injuring 6 this may be the deadliest anti-Semitic attack in the history of the U.S. After the shooting, the suspect was then taken into custody and taken to the hospital. As a part of the 6 people that were injured four of them were law enforcement officers and two were luckily released on Monday. At the same time as the SWAT was trying to get the shooter to surrender they were also aiding the other officers.
This situation reminded me of the shooting of the church with the three little girls. Although it is not the same exact situation because not only was the encounter with the little girls based on color and religion it was still around the same idea. This man stated it wasn't on religion but others say it may have had a religious motive, why else would it have been a synagogue. therefor, in both cases innocent people were basically murdered for no other reason besides their religious beliefs.

Trump administration considering limiting asylum seekers at southern border, could raise standard to claim asylum

Trump is trying to limit, if not, close off immigrants from coming to the US from crossing the border.a department of homeland security said that they could think about limiting the immigrants hat come to the US. It’s also closing the ports or limiting the people coming from overseas and will only let a couple come in if the administration has enough room in the facilities and if they can process them . In my opinion I feel like they should just check backgrounds to see who they are and if wether they have criminal records they aren’t allowed into America . I think it’s unfair to every hardworking immigrant. This relates to US history by bring immigration problem into this and show that America still isn’t ready to man up to the immigrants that are coming of people that wnat to better us.

GRAYSON DECKER New York City creates gender-neutral 'X' option for birth certificates

GRAYSON DECKER New York City creates gender-neutral 'X' option for birth certificates

What might seem like a small change to many is actually a huge step in transgender rights. New York is now the 5th state where you can opt for a third gender, X, on your birth certificate. People have been pressing for a way to easily change gender identity without the old requirements of surgery. They are now able to change their legal gender without even a document from a doctor. This is not the same for changing your passport, however. The US government requires a physician to confirm that the person has received clinical treatment for a gender change to be labeled that on your passport. A U.S. district court in Denver ruled in September that the state department cannot deny a passport to any gender neutral person. This is a huge step in the LGBTQ movement.

Sophia Zhukova - Melania's Trump "Be Best"

The first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, considers herself one of the most hunted people in the world. During a conversation with a journalist, Donald Trump's wife spoke about her project called Be Best ("Be the Best"), whose goal is to combat harassment on the Internet. "I can say that I am the person who is most bullied in the world,"
- noted Melania Trump.
“One of them. If you really hear what people say about me,” the US First Lady said after a journalist’s remark. According to her, to create a project Be Best prompted her, including mockery of herself. The wife of the American president added that children need to be taught the correct behavior on the Internet. They also need to know how to resist online bullying.

“We need to teach children social and emotional behavior, so when they grow up, they will know how to deal with these problems. This is very important,” Melania said.

Everyone knows what the Internet is - a thing that none of us can already refuse. It provides new features, amenities, you can learn and learn useful things through the Internet, whatever you want - you can do it here. But after all, everything has its dark side, and some peolpe, unfortunately, become victims. Because of his own stupidity, and simply the inability to use and direct their actions in a peaceful course. Some adults still have not learned how to use the Internet correctly, so what can we say about small children, and indeed in general about children, about us? I can agree with Melania Trump, and her message is very important for the world, this message is worth being heard. Once, I agree that that some day there was no Internet - there were no such problems. But even without the Internet, people had enough of them. But now, since in our time there is an amazing opportunity that can change people's lives, we must not forget that we need to learn how to properly use this opportunity. For our children, for ourselves, for everyone.

Pipe bomb suspect Cesar Sayoc makes first court appearance

Case Sayoc , the man accused of sending 14 bombs to prominent democrats around the country and if he is found guilty he will face 5 federal charges . This man has recently visited the court to see if he was convicted to which they accuse him of sending these boombs. Nobody that we’re meant to receive the bomb squad were hurt but this could have been very serious . He is yet to be proved guilty but if found guilty he will serve 46 years in person . In my opinion the person who is found should just be sentenced to jail straight away when found . Whoever sent them has to be questioned to how sick their mind is and why would they do it . This is related to US history by using the right to see a judge and have a lawyer. This follows the corresponding amendments that people have .

Lex Willis- Student charged with murder at North Carolina high school

Summary:
Sixteen-year-old sophomore Jatwan Craig Cuffie allegedly shot and killed sixteen-year-old Bobby McKeithen after a disagreement in the hallway. McKeithen was taken to Carolinas Medical Center Main and later died from his wounds. A suspect has been taken in and the school responded in lockdown. Witness Jorge Sanchez said that he saw the student open fire and ran. "I just processed everything, what's going on, I saw the gun and I had to run." Jatwan has now been charged with first-degree murder.
Analysis
School shootings have been increasing more and more in the United States. In the first 21 weeks of 2018 there were already 23 school shootings, which averages one school shooting a week and we're about to go in our eleventh month. That is insane. The first recorded school shooting in America was in 1840 but the biggest one was in 1999 where two students had shot 13 of their peers. There are so many young people now who are left with scars that they're stuck with for the rest of their lives.

Gay men reportedly attacked by knife-wielding, slur-yelling couple-Daviah Harrison

This article was made on October 29,2018 by Tim Fitzsimons. Keith Miller and Jeff Pellissier ,a recently married couple, enjoyed a day of snorkeling, picnicking, and hiking on Wisteria Island and they were on their what back home to Key West. Before they could make it back home, they saw a boat traveling toward them at high speed.Christopher Yarema and Stephanie Burnham were in the boat and the pair got out in the knee-deep water. Jeff Pellissier said that man(Christopher Yarema) yelled," Hey,Speedo man, what are you doing here, get the f*** off my island, you f*g".In response to Christopher, Miller replied " we are leaving, and we want nothing but peace". Pellissier said that Stephanie punched him in the face, broke his sunglasses, and hit him with an oar. She also threatened to kill the  couple if they did not get off of the island.Their inflatable dinghy(a small, inflatable boat) was also deflated by Christopher Yarema.

This really saddens me to know that two people who love each other can't enjoy their day together without getting interrupted by rude and hateful comments and actions. This article relates to history because in the past, many people have been ridiculed for being apart of the LGBTQ community.I believe that this was written so people could be aware of what's going on today and to let people know that hate crimes like this is still happening.

Over 8 million people have voted early, outpacing 2016, NBC News finds- by Dillon Quicksall

As the midterm elections approach, much speculation has arisen over what the outcome will be and how the outcome will influence U.S. Politics. This election has had a higher early voter than any other election in U.S. history. About 8,156,995 voter ballots have thus far been submitted, any many more will likely be submitted. That's 200,000 more than in 2016.
This absolutely massive turnout shows just how passionate citizens of America are right now. The Trump presidency ushered in a new era of heightened divisions within American, leading to a crescendo in racial and political tensions in the U.S. This mass election turnout shows how this political crisis has led to immense passion in Americans to vote. While this has occurred due to division in America, the fact that such a high voter turnout has occurred signifies that we are at least attempting to make a change, as no matter what policy, party, or politician you support, just by voting you are helping to make a positive change.

Lex Willis- Synagogue Shooting

Summary:
On October 20th at 9:05 AM, a shooter entered the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, which is predominantly Jewish, and killed eleven people and injured six people. The shooter was a 46-year-old man named Robert D. Bowers who was armed with three handguns and an assault rifle, which he reportedly all used. Bowers exclaimed that he wanted to kill all Jews. Officers made it to the synagogue at 10 AM and saw Bowers attempting to exit the building and one officer was shot in the hand while the other was wounded by broken glass. Robert went back into the synagogue after and backup officers as well as a SWAT team arrived at the synagogue and retrieved 2 victims. The SWAT team found Bowers on the third floor and opened fire. After an hour, Bowers was persuaded to surrender and he was taken to the hospital for he was shot several times. He survived and told the officers that Jews were "committing genocide to my people." He has now been charged over 60 counts.'
Analysis
This incident reminded me of the shooting at the church in Texas on November  2017. Things like this are completely heart-breaking because of how many lives have been taken away in such a short amount of time, and it's difficult because the United States has the right to bear arms but people abuse that right for awful things.

japan's princess surrenders royal status for love - will goodell

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/29/asia/princess-ayako-wedding-ceremony-intl/index.html

28 year-old princess ayako is the youngest child of princess hisako and late prince takamodo, and cousin of emperor akihito. according to japan's imperial law, any females in the royal family who marry someone who isn't of royal blood, must forfeit from the crown along with their status and allowance. By marrying 32 year-old moriya, an employee of an asian shipping company, the princess must renounce her royal status with only a small sum of money from the japanese government to pay for living expenses. The princesse's forced abdication from the crown erupted some debate over the patriarchal law that doesn't relate to men in the royal family. Many are arguing that japan should get rid of the law and let women hold the crown like every other modern day monarchy.  I personally think that this law should be overturned, because it truly serves no purpose except to remind us that women are still treated unequally than men.

Student dies after shooting at North Carolina high school

On Monday, a student from some North Carolina high school was killed after one of his classmates shot him. A freshmen from this school killed a sophmore who reportedly bullied him and his only result to was a gun. Police say they tried to help the shot kid but it was too late by the time the security tried it the kid was dead. The freshmen surrendered to the police in the act to hurt nobody else . The school admitted to not have metal detectors so anyone could have came with a loaded weapon. In my opinion , the student WAS KINDA bullying him so a punishment was worthy but not a cruel punishment as this was lmao. The school should have strong security and though checking . This relates to US history by once again trying to teach others that we have the freedom to bear arms but we do not have the right to shoot anyone we want. Murder is wrong especially if we just over use the 2 amendment .

Anna Speer- Another tragedy in Pittsburgh

On Saturday, a gunman opened fire on innocent temple goers killing 11 people and injuring 6 others.  After being trapped for twenty minutes by police, 46 year old Robert Bowers gave himself up and surrendered.  But not after changing the lives of so many. This was the deadliest attack  in the U.S. on the Jewish Race.

Bowers was armed with an AR-15  along with several handguns to inflict his brutal hatred towards the Jewish People.  How many innocent lives must be taken before common sense gun laws are passed in this country?  I cannot believe our founding fathers knew that technology today gives guns the capability to kill so many so fast when they constructed the second amendment.

GRAYSON DECKER KAVANAUGH CONFIRMED

       GRAYSON DECKER                      Brett Kavanaugh Confirmed
After many weeks of Brett Kavanaugh being under the pressure of sexual assault allegations by Ms. Christine Ford, he was finally confirmed as a supreme court judge. He underwent a 11th hour FBI investigation, with no sign of the sexual assault ever happening. This investigation has mixed opinions, of course, with republicans calling it "thorough" and "Democrats called it incomplete and a cover up. His reputation has taken a large blow, and most U.S. citizens do not trust him after all the sexual misconduct allegations.

Back in history, we established a very clear rule, you are "innocent until proven guilty." Obviously, this isn't how our judicial system works anymore. Everyone is putting blame on Kavanaugh based on the word of some women who was allegedly raped 34 years ago and who admitted to not even remembering the night that well. In no way is he getting what everyone else has gotten with our system of law. The fact that he only won 50-48 in congress marks a major turn for how our country may be going

ICE is sending out fake court dates to immigrants. Here's why.
By Maria Gabriella Pezzo and Roberto Daza
summary: ICE has been sending out fake court dates to many undocumented immigrants from qualifying for what's called the "stop time rule" which lets them stay in the U.S. if they have been in the U.S. contentiously and have a family member with a green card or U.S. citizenship. This causes many immigration courts to be filled on Halloween.
Analysis: I believe what they're doing is awful and hurts with many people hoping to get a green card or even U.S. citizenship. But my question is Is ICE breaking any big law here? what can the government do to stop preventing this from happening? it makes a lot of people lose any opportunity because people are rigging the system.

Emma Myers- Victims of the Pitsburgh Synagogue Shooting

here's the link if you want to read it for yourself

On Saturday, a gunman entered the sadly ironically named Pittsburgh Tree Of Life Synagogue and open fired, killing 11 members. The Synagogue was pretty new and most of the members were elderly people who had grown close over the years. The article names each victim, what they did for work, and described each. Many of the other members at the temple were interviewed, so it made the story a lot more personal and interconnected. I really enjoyed that this article focused less on the shooting and more on the victims and how it affected the people around them.

So, I know that when I click on an article for a shooting I expect a gruesome story. I've written about a shooting before, even, and I kind of know what to expect now. I was hesitant to chose this story as well because I know it affects everyone differently and can be a touching, depressing subject. But this article changed my mind, it focused on celebrating the people as a way of mourning. Each person was so unique and had their own quirks that let you know the people commenting really knew them. In history, I can't pinpoint an exact time this has happened, which makes it so special; I think more tragedies need to have this type of coverage in the media. I feel so much more attached to this event just by reading the article, and I feel like I already know the people.

Angela Merkel not seeking re-election- Maya Friedmann

Angela Merkel, who has been German Chancellor since 2005, has announced that she will not be running again for reelection in 2021. She also said that she does not want to run for any other political office either. The article states that Merkels announcement is a sign of her waning popularity and weakend power in her country.
This is somewhat like George Washington’s farewell address. Both Washington and Merkel are well known politicians announcing the end of their political career to their country.

Synagogue Massacre GRAYSON DECKER

                                                Synagogue Massacre
By Grayson Decker
On October 27, a man open fired in a Pittsburgh synagogue filled with people. 11 people were killed, 4 police officers were wounded, and 2 civilians were wounded. The culprit was Mr. Bowers, a 46 year old man, who was charged with 29 criminal counts. These events unfolded one day after pipe bombs were being sent to anti-trump supporters. Trumps take one the massacre involved it being "very devastating" and he believed that if "the temple had some kind of protection," then "it could have been a different story."
The bill of rights was created to give the people individual liberates, but in cases like these, those liberties were broken and abused. our "right to bear arms" was created as a protection from the government, now a way to shoot up religious grounds. This also goes against the first amendments freedom of religion since this man was an anti-Semite. This shows that we have rights under our government but we as citizens are naturally trusted not to abuse those rights.

Marissa Rubio: What can troops on the border do?

This article outlines the information available about how many troops will be deployed to the border to handle the large group of migrants marching to the border. The United States government plans to launch 5,000 or more active duty troops, that could easily increase to deal with the issue. There are particular laws that basically clarify what the troops can and can't do, but this can be open to interpretation. U.S. troop can NOT make arrests, seize drugs, or conduct searches. They can however provide planning assistance, engineering support, air support, medical teams, control facilities, and provide temporary housing. They also have the right to defend themselves but the outlines for what this qualifies as is unclear. The Trump administration has not outlined an approximate number of troops being sent, if they'll be armed, what they'll be armed with, the cost, and how the payment will be handled.
Issues with border control continue to weigh down the country that choses to blame the migrant and not the system that causes illegal crossing to begin with. When an immigrant is faced with a life or death situation and i forced to flee their home country out of necessity we shouldn't need to use intimidation and potential violence to deal with the issue. Why are there attempts made to cross the border to begin with if there is a previous knowledge of armed federal troops and ICE? Because their is little other choice. If the process of legally entering the country was a more accessible and timely process then maybe those put in this situation wouldn't have to chose between immediate danger and border control. This relates to the founding of America through Puritans and protestants. They were forced to flee persecution and dangerous situations to embark on the possibility of a positive future by venturing out into the notion of a better last.

5 Ways To Make Classrooms More Inclusive - Miranda Farrar

With younger generations being more open about their gender identities and sexualities, there is a higher risk of bullying in schools. Studies show that since LGBT+ students are bullied more often, it leads to missed classes, and they are more likely to commit suicide. To counteract this, organizations like Queer Endeavor are helping educate teachers on how to make their classrooms more inclusive. This consists of letting students identify their names and pronouns on the first day, refraining from using gendered language (for example, using "scientists" instead of "boys and girls"), and avoiding grouping kids by gender, amongst other things. Many educators struggle with how to show their support, and they don't know the right questions to ask. In addition, it can be challenging to address problems such as slurs being used. Queer Endeavor helps teachers learn how to be allies, and they encourage teachers to intervene when they hear inappropriate or offensive language being used. It may be uncomfortable, but it's necessary that all students have a safe space at school.

This article was written on October 26th, a few days after the beginnings of the #WontBeErased rallies for trans rights. Amidst a lot of dark and saddening news, this is a little beam of hope. It's specifically educating older generations who feel as if they can't keep up, but they want to be supportive. The reason this article is so important is because it's underlining the importance of education for all, and the environment in which students are a part of. In the Second Great Awakening, there was a huge movement for an increase in education. Many public schools came into existence, because the people realized that they wanted future voters to be educated citizens. Today, education is the main focus in daily life for most younger people. It is critical that classrooms are inclusive to all people, because everyone has a right to an education. All kids deserve a safe learning space where they can figure out who they are.

GOP lawmaker Steve King's rhetoric under scrutiny in wake of Pittsburgh shooting- Elton Tankersley

https://www.cnn.com/2018/10/29/politics/steve-king-george-soros-pittsburgh/index.html

This article discusses the extent to which conservative voices led to the mass shooting in a Synagogue in Pittsburgh. The article brings up some things that Steve King has said and discussed how that may have led to violence.

This article is written during a time where speech from anyone is being heavily scrutinized, and this article highlights that issue. This was written for people who disagree with Steve King to give another reason to not like him. It was written by Clare Foran, and I believe their bias is reflected in the article by the comments she choose to include from people about Steve King. This is important because it shows how many people will take what you say and interpret it in a bad way. This event relates to other mass shootings because there is always some sort of political message we are supposed to take away from them.

I think that unless Steve King actually said "you should go shoot people in a Synagogue" he is in no way responsible for the mass shooting. "Hate speech" is still free speech, and is therefore protected by the constitution and the idea that a public figure is responsible if someone acts on beliefs similar that public figure by shooting people, that is somehow the public figure's fault is fundamentally flawed.

AYSHA JACKSON

After the catastrophe in Pittsburgh on Saturday , Amanda Golden a CNN producer posted on Twitter. She posted screenshots of her mother ,daughter of two holocaust survivors, and hers conversations. The messages basically summed up how most jews were feeling because of this incident.

Based on what the mother said in the messages I think she is a very strong women. I think she’s very sad and devestated with the whole ordeal. Also it brings to my attention how when castrophe happens it bring the nation closer together on the road toward equality. It sucks that that’s what it takes but at least it’s happening.

I relate this to any movement. The #Metoo movement and #blacklivesmatter , I think it goes hand and hand with what’s happening now. In the same exact way. Catostrophic event =reform. None of us wanted these things to happen but at least they are provoking action in schools ,communities, and our nation as a whole.

this was published October 29th of 2018. this is clearly showing the cruelty of innocent animals still going on in our word. with the understanding that not all animals seem to hold good into their lifestyle. it does seem excessive and emotionally harmful to those in love with caring creatures after this being, seen as a SERIAL CAT KILLER, it does seem only right to hold fear. to be labeled serial killer of any sort it must be 3 murders or more yes the word murder is proper use for this. As a human with a life, with a breath, with a soul, and more i can only see and imagine the pain this animal felt in its last breathes. as a human being able to make only so much of a change alone it sickens me and many others to know these animals are hurt like this. on the average pitbulls get their ears clipped for fighting reasons. no they don't get medication, sanitation, yet its very common. night after night there's a new case of roster fights. in this very cruel yet privileged, but we let things like this happen.

11 Killed in Synagogue Massacre; Suspect Charged With 29 Counts
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/27/us/active-shooter-pittsburgh-synagogue-shooting.html

On the morning of Saturday the 27th, a man with an AR-15 assault rifle and 3 or more handguns was shouting harmful anti-Semitic slurs and killed 11 or more congregants and injured 6 others, 4 of those being police officers, in a Pittsburgh Synagogue. This shooting was one of the deadliest in the U.S. Jewish community.  Despite having no previous criminal record, the suspect Robert D. Bowers was confirmed to be guilty when he surrendered when barricaded in a room. Federal officials charged him with 29 criminal counts that could possibly lead to the dead penalty.

This article depicts a tragedy that is another example of a hate crime in our country. This crime is similar to the Brith Sholom Kneseth Israel synagogue shooting in St. Louis, Missouri. Both were an act of anti-Semitic beliefs and considered hate-crime. It's truly sickening to see crimes like this continue to occur and not much being done to truly prevent and stop these incidents from happening.

Hated for being brown -Grecia Jimenez

On October 25th, Janet Sabriu was yet another victim of hate speech and racism from an angry white person. The man, later identified as Kevin, is shown screaming from his car window, "Learn english" and "It's my country." These are only some of the hateful remarks Kevin shouted. He also said “Trump’s deporting your illegal cousins, today, b----.” and continues to use profanity and shout obsenities throughout the video. Sabriu is a Houston resident of 9 years and a US citizen who was on her way to vote that afternoon. Her two year-old daughter watched from the back seat as this man insulted her and ordered her to leave the US.
Way too many times we see or hear about POC being insulted, degraded, and dehumanized for having a different skin tone or speaking another languague. I, as a young brown girl,  am tired of this happening to my friends, family and even strangers. We as a community are done with the hate and the mistreatment for speaking words in a toungue they do not understand, for being brown, for being from another country with a different culture and customs. The situations that Janet, and many others, have to face are examples of colorism because immigrants of darker complexions are more likely to be pulled over and asked for documents just looking different. I have faced many situations throughout my life where people tell me to "stop playing victim" because it "does not affetct me directly" or to "stop being so sensitive". The thing is, it does affect me, it affects me because everyday when I wake up, I wake up with my dark skin and my dark eyes and puffy curly hair, which obviously sets me apart from my fair skinned friends and siblings. My skin color makes me more susceptible to colorism and to being told to "go back to my country". My fathers skin color is what makes me fear that one day, I might go home to face that I no longer have him. My mother's limited english makes me fear that she might be verbally assaulted while she goes shopping for groceries. This situation does affect us directly, because our family could be next.

Alex Carrington- Aiding Children of the Opioid Crisis

The article begins by addressing the narration of a girl named Hailey Leclair. She began by mentioning that she was only about 12 years old when she started to notice her mother's drug use.
Last October, the Bangor Daily News in Penobscot County, Maine, told Hailey's story, through diary-like entries she'd written that reflected feelings of frustration, confusion and hurt as she tried to navigate her mother's and stepfather's addictions.
The effects of her family’s addiction included separation from her sibling, beginning a new life with different guardians wondering why her mother chose to use drugs over mothering her children. In addition to these difficulties, Hailey was also forced to tough the usual strains of finishing middle school on her own.
Hailey, a current sophomore at Old Town High School, told the U.S. News that she has more trust issues due to incident. "Parents are supposed to be the number 1 people there for you, and I kind of felt back-stabbed because I had no clue what was going on and I was completely oblivious for a while.”
Hailey's experience is indicative of how the U.S. opioid epidemic has harmed people who are not even suffering from addiction. Moreover, for an estimated 54.8 percent of Maine children who were removed by the state from their homes in 2016, parental alcohol or other drug use was a contributing factor for the removal. Nationwide, substance use increased as a factor for removal from 18.5 percent of cases in 2000 to 35.3 percent in 2016.
As an effect of these incidents, the Department of Justice awarded Penquis, a Bangor-based nonprofit organization, a three-year, $632,000 grant to establish social services geared toward children situations similar to Hailey’s.
This shift in morals depicts the Antebellum Age of Reform. Similar to this focus on the removal of drug use in America, the temperance movement emphasizes the effect that narcotics have on family life.
