Lately, Cyntoia Brown has been all over the news. This is weird because she has actually been in jail for over ten years. However, social media is blowing up over the hashtag "#freecyntoiabrown", when Rihanna shared it, it went crazy viral. In 2004 she went into jail for killing a man that abused her with drugs, prostitution, alcohol, etc. The man who was paying to have sex with her was 43 years old, and she was a teenager at the time, sixteen actually. She had the courage to fight back after being abused, and shot and killed the predator, but was convicted of murder, not as a mode of defending herself. However, when Cyntoia was younger, she ran away from her adoptive parents before getting involved with prostitution in Nashville.
This relates to APUSH, because this ties into women's rights, and movements such as what sparked at the Seneca Falls Convention. It is sad that she got put into jail after bing forced into prostitution and to think that she was just trying to defend herself but has already been in jail for over a decade is crazy. I think that so many things about abuse and abduction are coming out right now and before the women started standing up in the 19th century, nothing would have been done about it.

Not only that, but a good chunk of time has passed and she’s still struggling. This situation as a whole needs to be further investigated because it’s stuff like this that makes people being abused scared to fight for their lives.
ReplyDeleteShe has been struggling for so long, I hope she is given the rights she deserves soon.
ReplyDeleteIt's weird how it's coming back up, it needs to be reopened. the power pf social media is so strong these days that I don't have a doubt that it could influence the court to reopen.
