Why "13 Reasons Why" is Dangerous- Emma Lochabay

Based on the 2007 book by Jay Asher, the show tells the story of Hannah Baker , a high-school student who commits suicide. Before doing so, she leaves behind 13 audiotapes that tell the story of her downward spiral, each dedicated to one of the classmates whose cumulative actions she says drove her to take her own life. The show has become must-see viewing for middle-school and high-school students across the world. It has also become a viral sensation, instigating an ongoing conversation about the many dark themes — sexual assault, rape culture, bullying, teen suicide — with which the show engages. It’s also increasingly been a lightning rod for controversy, with many mental-health professionals arguing that it romanticizes or glorifies teen suicide.

This article was published on CNN,  a popular and trustworthy news cite that i can trust for not including any bis. Before reading this article, I have heard the different ideas on peoples opinions of controversy of the Show. I, myself have watched the show and can understand peoples worries about it. It is important that people know that there is another way out of the dark. This could synthesize to controversy of of parents being upset about their own kids using social media.

  1. This makes a lot of sense but I definitely think that this show brings significant awareness to the struggle of bullying. I definitely think that parents should be in control of who watches this.

  2. I understand how that makes sense, but it also shows the point of view of the other girl (Jessica) who's been through similar issues as Hannah and she didn't kill herself. This shows mostly focuses on what people's actions can lead to.

  4. I agree that the show can easily affect people. In my opinion, the show brought a lot of important awareness to sexual assault and harassment and how girls are really treated in high school.

  5. It's interesting to see such different take sways from the movie. If there is one thing that can be taken by all, I would hope it would be empathy. Great article.
