Could the Civil War have been stopped? Well, at least president Trump thinks so. In a recent interview, Trump started talking about how his campaign is often compared to Andrew Jackson's. Their two campaign years were known for being some of the meanest and ugliest of them all. Trump said he likes Andrew Jackson and the people of Tennessee for their love of Jackson too. In the interview, he went on to say that the Civil War could have been avoided if Andrew Jackson would have been president just a little later in the game. Even though he died decades before the actual war, Jackson was not in favor of the country being in conflict. Jackson was also described as being rough and tough and working out situations which may have led to Trump's statement.
This news story obviously relates to the Civil War and how it truly shaped our nation to what it is today. We are still going back and relating present events to that of the past. Our whole country would be incredibly different if the Civil War had never taken place. I don't know if any good would have come out of that though. I don't think it's a good idea to ever go to war with your own country for many obvious reasons, but if they are fighting for their most basic human rights, then it is a necessary war. I don't know what would have happened if that turning point of a war would never taken place, but I would imagine it would be very different.

The debate over the necessity of the Civil War will never be settles. Both sides have persuasive points, however, I think that it probably was inevitable from the time the first slave was brought upon America's shores.
ReplyDeleteSome type of war would have happened- if not North versus South, then repressed minorities and enslaved individuals versus the upper class.
