On Friday night a deadly fire started at a converted artist warehouse in Oakland. California. The exact cause of the fire is unknown but as of now 9 people have died and 25 are missing. A party with about a 100 attendees was occurring at the time of the fire. The party-goers on the second floor were in more danger than anyone else because the only way to exit is down one small, precarious stairway. Firefighters have not been able to survey the whole building yet due to its unstable post fire condition.
This article was written by Kimberly Hutcherson and Dan Simon from CNN. The event occured last night. It's terrible that people have died because of the unsafe conditions of this warehouse. I think all buildings should be regularly checked for safe and accessible exits in case of a fire. Places of businesses and homes go through inspections, but anywhere that people will be present in should be checked for safety. I the building had had proper exits and safe stairways or at least had abided by proper maximum occupancy limits the death of nine or more people could have been prevented. This can be synthesized to The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in New York City in 1911. In this incident factory workers had been locked in to their work room to prevent their leaving so when a fire broke out they had no way to escape. It's important for our nation to continue improving fire safety.

This is so scary, i hope they can find out the reason for the fire to prevent it from happening again in the future, as well as find the ones who are missing
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about not only checking homes and businesses, but also anywhere people may go. Fires can be prevented if you have the rights tools and plans set in place.
ReplyDeleteThis deeply saddens me. My heart goes out to all those who were affected by this tragic moment. Hopefully those who are lost, are found and that this never happens again.
