Kate Kahle: The Dead Sea is Drying Out

The dead sea is drying at about 3.3 feet a year-- an alarming rate. This is because the Dead sea needs a water source, and many of the water sources around the area have been diverted for various infrastructure purposes of the surrounding countries. Mineral extraction for cosmetic products are also to blame. Last year, Isreal and Jordan signed a deal to stabilize the Dead Sea, but it is unclear whether or not their plan will work.
I think that it is as important to preserve the environment, especially a facet of the environment in such culturally rich part of the world, and one that has contributed something to many culture, customs, and religions. Bureaucracy should not take from us the things that belong to everyone, and which should be here for our children to experience and enjoy. The dead sea is on the same path as many of the water sources that have dried up in the past few decades because of government's irresponsibility in diverting it.

  1. Things like this make me really angry. It would be different if the sea was drying up for reasons out of our control, but the fact that it's drying up because we are taking away its water sources is terrible!

  2. I really do think that we should definitely make a change and really take this as a learning lesson to push us to conserve water.

  3. The fact that we are losing one of the Earth's most amazing treasures due to our own ignorance and inconsiderate actions deeply saddens me. I wish we had more power to fix what we've broken and lead the way to a future of less destruction and more appreciation.

  4. This is so sad! I wish they could promote more of things the community can do to help prevent the Dead Sea from drying out.
