Summary: Authorities found a third body on the property of a South Carolina man who is now connected to the death of seven people and the kidnapping of a woman who they found chained inside a storage container. They found her chained by the neck and ankle in a storage counter on Todd Kohlhepp’s large property. The next day they found the dead body of her boyfriend, dead from multiple gunshot wounds. The couple had been missing for about two months. The other bodies were found close together in the following days. Authorities will be back to search more, but they think they have found them all. Kohlhepp also confessed to murdering four people at a motorcycle shop in 2003 upon his arrest. Before confessing he requested three things: to transfer money to a girl he’d been helping rage to help her pay for college, to give his mother a photograph, and to let him speak with his mom. They are having to investigate all of these crimes which were stretched out over an entire decade. As a teen, he went to jail for fourteen years for tying up and raping his 14 year old neighbor. He showed investigators where two other bodies were buried, but did not tell them who it was. The name of the woman found alive has not been released since the suspect is a registered sex offender.
Analysis: This article was published the same day that the woman was found on his property. It is chilling to read of a mass murder that is seemingly so pointless, and has spanned over such a long time. I cannot believe that this man was able to kill six other people before being caught for the kidnapping of a girl and murder of her boyfriend. I haven’t heard of an instance like this for a while, and it is always bothersome to read about such tragic things happening to random people, especially without any motive. I think the reason that stories such as this touch so many people is because you read it and terrible things happened to these random people who were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Its horrifying because it could have been you, it could have been a family member, it could have been a friend. This is why everyone can relate to stories such as this, because all of those bodies were real, alive, and loved by someone before they were killed and buried by this man. I think that at first when we read something like this we think how awful it is and how hard that must be for the families, but when you think about it, it’s terrifying because it just as well could’ve been someone you knew, and then you are the grieving family member instead of a nameless, faceless person out there. I think if more people really took the time to think about this there would be more of a fight put up to reduce horrible crimes such as this, and to at least give further resources to help cases like this be solved more quickly versus being solved 10+ years later, with a kidnapped lady living for two months chained by the neck in a storage container. One thing that I think will eventually help to stop crimes such as this will be the furthering of technology.
