summary:
West Baltimore elementary's "Mindful Moment Room" is a room where kids can practice deep breathing and yoga instead of a harsh detention system. The principle believes that once the kids start to develop self-calming methods they will be able to handle themselves and their own situations in the world outside of school.
analysis:
Deborah Bloom from CNN is a non-biased author who doesn't say whether or not she supports the idea or is opposed to it. Detention is known to be a harsh environment where kids are supposed to be so bored and miserable that they later decide to change their actions. Once I read this article I was excited that someone was thinking about the kids and what most effective for them in the long run. This article is written for everybody and can appeal to all parents who may be struggling with how to control their kids. I think many schools could benefit from this new form of "punishment." Meditation in schools can be synthesized to Dorthea Dix wanting to change the condition of mental hospitals

I think it's great that schools are finding alternatives to harsh punishments for their young students.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! In my mind, detention sends the wrong message to misbehaving kids. I think it's better to try and teach them to do better the next time, rather than just locking them in a room for an hour.
