After 9/11, the Patriot Act was passed to listen in on potential terrorist calls. This act has been used to justify the government listening in on every single call that Americans make, but it wasn't even very effective. The USA Freedom Act is a shot at stopping this invasion of privacy.
This was written by Steve Chapman for the Chicago Tribune. The Patriot Act was put into place to protect us from terrorists, but the way the government has been abusing it is unforgivable. The NSA could argue that since the act was passed, the government took down Osama Bin Laden, but according to this article, listening to phone calls had little to do with that. Those against the invasion of privacy would support the new act, and they would probably feel confident in getting it passed because now the public knows what's going on. Once something goes public, the general view of the people will get back to those in charge of passing the act, and hopefully they will proceed according to what the citizens want.
This is a violation of our natural rights. We should have our own privacy, it's kind of like one of the amendments stated in the bill of rights that there should be no unreasonable searches, but that was probably meant physically. This is the same thing.
ReplyDeleteGovernment accessing information without a courts consent violates the 4th amendment. Is a recent court ruling the extent of the Patriot Act was decreased involving personal data and information.
