Leslie Kelly: The Next Big Environmental Fight: Tampons?

We probably don't think very much about the products we use during our periods, so long as they get the job done. But should we start reconsidering those can't-live-without, sent-from-the-gods tubes of cotton? A new movement for green feminine hygiene products is emerging, in which companies are showing the world a slew of environmentally-friendly and economic solutions to the evil red queen. These include sponges, which were have been used for absorbing menstrual blood since ancient times, reusable menstrual cups and toxin-free traditional tampons. Although I personally don't need any of this stuff, I think it's a very important thing to be aware of. Think of how many applicators and wrappers someone who gets periods will use and throw away in a lifetime. These green products also appeal to those who fear the toxins that might be in normal tampons and to those who want more bang for their buck, as the all-natural sponges and cups can be washed and reused. I hope that this article is also a sign that the taboo associated with periods is starting to fade away; it doesn't make people crazy, it doesn't make them gross, it's just a thing because we have bodies and it really doesn't matter.

  2. I've been wondering about this recently. All these things we do for environmental conservation but it doesn't occur to most people that little things like tampons end up making a huge impact.
