Since the 2014 winter Olympics began in Sochi (and even before they began!) we've been hearing non-stop about all the setbacks that have occurred in Sochi with construction and preparation for the games; arenas not being completed, stray dogs roaming the streets, and most notably, the far-from-finished hotels that athletes and journalists are staying in. Now, more strange information is coming out about Sochi. This year's winter games aren't actually being held in Sochi, but are being held in a town called Alder. However, this news really isn't too controversial or surprising because this situation would be similar to saying a certain event is being held in Dallas, when actually it is being held in Arlington; in other words Adler is sort of a suburb or smaller district of Sochi.
Furthermore, another strange site has been noticed in "Sochi" - fences. There are fences everywhere, made of metal with a stonewall design on the lower half, with a faux wood design on the top half of the fence. They appear very out of place in the town, and were put up by government contractors to hide unfinished construction sites, swamplands, and most unfortunate, poverty. In the Alder region, small mansions have been built along the board walk, which was also built specially for the Olympics, that mostly unoccupied and unfinished. It also seems that many of the supposed improvements made in the city are of poor quality. Many question whether the improvements made during these winter games will really have a long-term beneficial affect for the people of Adler, Russia.
Amongst all the controversy of the construction of hotels and such for the winter Olympics, I surely hope that the improvements made bring the promise of a better future for those in Adler. Based on the video in the link, the people of Adler seem amazed and extremely appreciative for the improvements made to their little town, such as the pavement of roads and the installment of electricity (or more efficient electricity, I'm not sure which). The town seems very quaint, traditional, and filled with kind people, and we can only hope that Vladimir really had their interest in mind when commissioning construction for the games.

Just add it to the list! Haha. I don't blame Russia for saying it was Sochi when really it was just an Arlington equivalent suburb, but there are some mistakes that Sochi has made that are a little more serious. Watching the games, I've noticed the commentary on how dangerous the courses are, and how the Russian teams have had more practice time, which I believe just isn't right.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Mckay! It's understandable that they would just show Adler as a part of Sochi since we do the exact same thing. I agree with Camille in her hope that with all of the improvements and monuments being constructed in Adler, it will bring a new concept of wealth and prosperity to the soon-to-be tourist attraction.

ReplyDeleteVideo games have unquestionably become more ambitious and impressive in recent years. When you look at the likes of The Last Of Us, it's impossible to overstate just how far video games have come since people were playing Pong forty-odd years ago. But for all the innovations within the medium, and for all the new fangled ideas and increasingly elaborate control schemes, there's something to be said for how much more straight forward things were in the games we played as kids. ترفند بازی انفجار
