"Hoffman's Heroin Points to Surge in Grim Trade" (Melissa Kurtzman, 5th Period)

Summary: While the passing of Phillip Seymour Hoffman is extremely tragic, his death is also being used as a way to shine light on the rising numbers of heroin related deaths throughout the country, especially in New York. The article talks about how heroin mills are popping up not only in big cities, but also in smaller towns. For example, last month the governor of Vermont used his State of the State address to solely discuss the "full-blown heroin crisis" in Vermont. The article also goes on to reveal the insane amount of different mills throughout NYC and how a person never knows the quality of the substance that they're buying. In fact, many times heroin is diluted with baking soda or other white powdery ingredients.

Analysis: First of all, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Phillip Seymour Hoffman. He was one of the greatest actors of this time. This article reveals lots of information about the dangers of heroin and how bad the addiction to it has become recently. I hope that police start to look into stopping these mills from producing more drugs and that people with heroin and other drug addiction problems seek the help that they need.

  1. People know that when they take these kind of drugs they will become addicted to them. However, our mind, if we let it, is adept at making excuses or exceptions to rules or common teachings, especially if that exception or excuse will allow us to do something we want to do. When people do things such as take heroine or do drugs, the first time, they are making an excuse to themselves. Their brain is making this complex conclusion that taking this drug (or just falling into a tempation in general) will be ok because... (whatever this train of thought is, excuse, exception, etc. is). Lastly, this brings up the question, why is the want/demand for recreational drugs so large. Is the authentic happiness that the earth provides not good enough?
