"Eating too much added sugar may be killing you" By: McKay Fugate

Sugar not only makes you fat, it may be killing you. Consuming too much added sugar — in regular soda, cakes, cookies and candy — increases your risk of death from heart disease, according to a new study, the largest of its type. "The risk of cardiovascular disease death increases exponentially as you increase your consumption of added sugar," says the study's lead author, Quanhe Yang, a senior scientist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. On average, adults in the USA in 2010 consumed about 15% of their daily calories — about 300 calories a day, based on a 2,000-calorie diet — from added sugars. That's far more than the American Heart Association's recommendation that women consume no more than 100 calories a day from added sugars, or about 6 teaspoons of sugar; and men consume no more than 150 calories a day, or about 9 teaspoons.  Major sources of added sugars in Americans' diets are sugar-sweetened beverages, desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts (ice cream) and candy, Yang says. Rachel Johnson, a spokeswoman for the American Heart Association and a nutrition professor at the University of Vermont, says, "Now we know that too much added sugar doesn't just make us fat, it increases our risk of death from heart disease."
This was really interesting to read about because, no offense to the American Heart Association, but I thought that this was common knowledge. I just try to stay away from sugar as much as possible because we all know sugar is bad for you in so many ways. I think this article is aimed at mothers of young kids, and single adults. This study is trying to warn them that giving their kids or themselves too much sugar can increase your health risks and to be mindful of how much sugar they are eating daily.

  1. I felt the same way when I saw this. Yeah, too much sugar is bad for you--if Americans can't realize that to begin with, this problem we have with "schoolin' and learnin'" is bigger than we thought.

  2. I was thinking the same thing. That explains my mother saying I was going to make myself sick to the stomach. I guess this means I should put down the Lemon Heads.

  3. Yeah I mean our bodies were not made to process the amount of sugar we eat. Technically, the sweetest things we should be eating is like fruit... But yeah not only does it increase your heart disease risk, but also obesity, diabetes (because your body becomes insulin resistant), and a ton of other diseases and problems. That's what sucks is food companies do not care what they are doing to their consumers. They just want the money.
