This weekend, Michael Sam, an all american defensive lineman at the university of Missouri, announced in an interview ESPN that he is "an openly gay man". This is the first prospect for the NFL draft that is openly gay. People have seem to be accepting of Sam and he is still in the running to be drafted in May. This is big news.
This is so exciting for the NFL and the gay communities because for so long people have discriminated gay athletes (or gays in general) in fear of getting to close to them, but Sam is brave enough to tell everyone, and people are kind and welcoming to be accepting of Sam's sexuality. That's a big step. I hope Sam gets drafted, and he definitely deserves to with his credentials. (all american, MVP, and top defensive lineman in the Southeastern conference) If he doesn't get drafted now he has to opportunity to accuse people of not picking him because he is gay- which isn't fair. Hopefully with Sam's bravery, more professional athletes can have the courage to speak up on their sexuality too, go gays.

I read about this and I think its absolutely amazing! They were talking about it on the radio today and they said it should be normal for people to come out to the world not a special occasion.
ReplyDeleteI agree that his credentials are great, but one thing that people forget is that football is a TEAM sport. It's more than just his credentials that determine if he gets to be on the team. For example, getting into college is more than just your academics, its you as a person and whether or not you fit the school. Getting a job is more than just your credentials, it requires an interview to see if you fit the company. So it would be wrong for us to assume that just because he's good that he gets to be in the NFL. There are tons of great athletes that don't make it, or get kicked out because they throw off the chemistry of the team and it affects the team's ability to succeed.
