With ever-rising tensions with Iran, President Trump sent out another tweet stating that "If Iran wants to fight, that will be the official end of Iran. Never threaten the United States again!" While these bold words may be minor on their own, they are a part of a much larger problem: escalating tensions with Iran. When asked by reporters if the U.S. will go to war with Iran, President Trump replied: "I hope not." Earlier in the week, the New York Times reported that the administration was considering sending over a hundred thousand troops to the Middle East, however this hasn't been confirmed. Regardless, the relationship between the U.S. and Iran is becoming increasingly tense.
This reminds me of George Bush's war on terrorism, as he increased military presence, quite controversially, in the Middle East, similarly to Trumps threats. On one hand, I am very worried where these tensions will lead us, yet on the other, there is a good chance this is all for show, as politicians, and the Trump administration in particular, are a lot worse at actually carrying out their promises than they are at making them. But if the president of the U.S. declares that he merely "hopes" we don't go to war with a foreign power, then I think we have something to fear.
