On Thursday, the Democratic Baltimore Mayor, Catherine Pugh, resigned. This decision was because of a scandal involving a book deal to the University of Maryland Medical Center, of which Pugh was a board member. Pugh had authored a children's book, titled "Healthy Holly," and UMMS spent $500,000 to purchase 100,000 copies of the book. Due to Pugh's resignation, Bernard C. Young will become the 51st mayor of Baltimore.
This article was written by Kate Sullivan and updated on May 2, 2019, making it fairly recent. I had seen a short clip of somebody talking about Pugh's book and the scandal surrounding it before reading the article, but wasn't aware of the numbers involved. Similar to how the Watergate scandal exposed Nixon's less-than-legal affairs, this incident has decreased public trust in the government but is overall a good thing as it has removed a corrupt person from a position of power and set an example for how people should conduct themselves.
