Heineken's new ad gets totally political, and it's surprisingly great
Summary: Heineken recently released an advertisement with an interesting twist on "sharing a beer." The commercial shows several pairs of complete strangers placed in a room together to complete a series of challenges such as building a stool. At one point the two people sit down and answer basic questions like "What do you think we have in common?" Most of the answers are very positive. Little do they know, they have a major fundamental difference in values with the person they are paired with. One pair is a transgender woman and a man who does not believe in being transgender. Another pair is a climate change activist and a climate change denier. The last pair is a feminist and an antifeminist. When they find out what the other person believes they have a choice to either leave or stay and share a beer with that person and discuss their differences.
Analysis: I was a little apprehensive about the rise of the incorporation of activism and political statements in advertising we've been seeing lately, especially with the Kendall Jenner Pepsi ad which ended up being horribly pandering and just plain dumb instead of making any sort of actual statement. However, this ad does everything the Pepsi ad was trying to do. It shows that all the things we let divide us in this day and age really don't make us so different after all and that when you actually have a face to face conversation with someone, even if their views are the complete opposite of yours, it can still be an enjoyable experience because we are all human and have our own struggles.
