Brittney Delpey: School Bans Santa Claus

This article was written by the Off the Grid News Office on December 1st, 2016. They keep an unbiased outlook and quote people and facts. The article was written to inform the public about a step a certain school took towards Christmas and religion in Hillsboro Oregon this holiday season.

The Hillsboro school district issued out a letter to their administration to keep in mind of students who don't celebrate christmas and that they shouldn't be decorating with christmas decorations. Among these decorations that they cannot use is Santa Claus because he's a "religious figure". Many parents and students were upset by this because santa is part of the Christmas cheer. It's interesting because santa isn't necessarily religious, in fact he was originally created in paganism and then introduced elsewhere.

Prior Knowledge and synthesis: I had no prior knowledge to this event. It goes against the constitution and the freedom of religion.

  1. I do not think that Santa is a religious figure. While it is good to remember that not everybody celebrates Christmas, the majority of people do. Also, some people do not celebrate the religious aspect of Christmas, but still have fun opening gifts and having Christmas activities, like Santa. I do not think that school districts should be mandating that people celebrate a certain way, like not having Santa, because everybody has their own traditions, and it is rude to tell them that they cannot have them.

  2. I agree with your depiction of the article and as well as Lauren's comment. It's kind of restricting in unreasonable ways that they are "banning" Santa Claus because of ideals that it is religious when in fact it is quite the opposite.

  3. Santa is literally commercialized propaganda used to sell toys and manipulate kids. He's based on St. Nicholas, but he's changed a lot. The Santa we see in America is basically a caricature. That's hardly religious. That said, I don't think religious symbols should be banned from schools. People certainly shouldn't preach, but religion is, for many, a major part of their life and identity. I'm an agnostic pessimist, but I can respect that. Why not let people express their religion in a silent, non-disruptive way? As long as the expression is not offensive (i.e. NOT a shirt proclaiming "GOD HATES GAYS" or "IT'S ADAM AND EVE, NOT ADAM AND STEVE") why can't students wear what they wish or decorate as they wish? I'm not condoning christmas music in any way, but I think people should be able to express how they celebrate the holiday season (if at all) freely.
