Summary: In this article, they talk about the beginning of Daylight Saving Time as the clocks were turned back an our on November 6, 2016 at 2:00 am, which marked the end of the Daylight Saving Time period (a policy that had been in effect for a century). It first began in Germany on May 1, 1916. The main purpose (disregarding other intentions) was to save energy throughout the majority of World War I. William Willet had a different idea years before of using the time change for a short period of leisure. Sports and recreation industries supported it as they gave more sales and later times for school kids and workers. On the other hand, movie theaters found it not very helpful as less people wanted to go to the movies in daylight. A few more reforms were made to the creation of DST. They observed a period of six months of both Standard time and DST as well as full year of DST. Since 20005, we have had 8 months of Daylight Saving time, though people are beginning to question it as a whole.
Analysis: Olivia B. Waxman, a reporter for Time magazine, created this article on November 4, 2016. The article written for the common man, it gives us both a positive and negative outlook on Daylight Savings. It was written to inform us about the social construct, and push us to think of how important it actually is.
Significance- This article is important because it poses thought provoking arguments about the Daylight Savings time. We are made aware of the fact that it;s just an idea that was created moreso for the leisure of citizens.
Synthesis- This, as a construct created by man that is in all actuality in our heads, can relate to the Cult of Domesticity created in the 1800s. It was a mere idea created by man that women had a certain role and should tend to the home.
