Elizabeth McCullough- Vandalism of a Mississippi Church

Synopsis: A predominately African American church was recently vandalized in a very extreme manner. The place of worship was scorched from the inside, a large portion of the damage being in the sanctuary. While the structure was being engulfed in flames, the people responsible for the arson spray painted "Vote Trump" on one of it's walls. The police of Greenville, Mississippi are treating the the destruction as a hate crime.

Analysis: This is truly disheartening to read about. The fact that people commit hate crimes like this in 2016 is unbelievable. What I'm not surprised about, is that the person or persons who did this were Trump supporters. Being a conservative republican, many of the people who back Trump are often prejudice to certain groups of people. One of those being African American people. If the people who support Trump are capable of this, what could he potentially do if he is elected president?

Synthesis: This crime can be synthesized to an extreme act of violence done to an African American church in 1963. One Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama, explosions in The 16th Street Baptist Church killed four young girls. The sticks of dynamite were placed by four members of the Ku Klux Klan, and were set off by timers. That was a hate crime just as much as the vandalism of the church in Mississippi. There were no casualties due to the fire, but next time we might not be so lucky.

  1. This is so upsetting. I understand people have such strong beliefs in who they're voting for, but advocating the preferred candidate in a respectful and professional way would make such a bigger impact! I'm hoping the community can quickly help the church recover.
