Abbey Winiger- Prisoners Are on Strike

SUMMARY- Last month, on the 45th anniversary of the infamous Attica Prison uprising, tens of thousands of US inmates launched a nationwide protest that continues today, according to advocates who helped organize the effort.
The inmates' grievances are as varied as the states they came from: Pennies for labor in South Carolina, racial discrimination in California, excessive force in Michigan. However, they share an overarching goal: end legalized slavery inside American correctional facilities. Jails and prisons don't have to be luxurious -- or comfortable, for that matter -- but the US Supreme Court has said they're not supposed to be dangerous or dehumanizing. Yet the 13th Amendment of the US Constitution, while banning slavery, allows prisoners to work for little to no pay, in what inmate advocates say crosses the limits of human decency, amounting to modern-day servitude. This article is taking the side of the prisoners, saying they are treated inhumane and unfair. Even though they are prisoners they still deserve basic human rights.

ANALYSIS/SYNTHESIS- I think this article is a really important issue and current pressing matter. It calls out the jail system, and how it treats inmates unfairly. Although they have committed a crime, they still deserve the right to basic human care. I agree with the inmates that they are treating unfairly. This reminds me of the civil rights movements and how people stood up for what they believed in. The prisoners are taking a stand to implement a change.

  1. I am glad they are taking a stand for their horrible jail conditions. Just because they made a mistake in their life doesn't mean they need to dehumanize them. I hope they will make an impact on their unfair treatment.

  2. Slavery is the important word there, because that is exactly what it is. Most people currently imprisoned are there for non violent offenses. We have lost sight of the main purpose of our prison system: Rehabilitation.

  3. Although the situation of mistreating prisoners may not make some people even turn their heads, people need to realize that although they have made horrible decisions that led them there, they are people who still need to be treated fairly.
