On Sunday, February 8th, Mona Chalabi revealed the new statistic that 38% of women earn more money than their husbands. In 1/3rd of these relationships the women is only earning more because the husband isn't working at all. That leaves 29% of women earning more than their working spouse. This is still an improvement from 1987 where the percentage was 19%. Once a woman started to earn more money than the man, divorce rates started to go up. The data showed that it did not matter the gap between the pays for the man and women, just the fact that the women was earning more. American women also spend about 44 more minutes each day on housework than men do, and studies show that as the woman's pay increases so does the amount of time doing housework. Cornell University released a study that showed that the pay check can also influence infidelity. A man who is completely dependent on his partner is 5 times more likely to cheat on her than a man who makes the same amount as his spouse. Women can also act differently, when they earn more money they are more likely to use anxiety medication and suffer from anxiety.
Throughout history women have changed the game. In the 1920's they completely changed their preconceived look by inventing the "Flapper" look and revolutionized the way we dress today. There were also leaders fighting for women's right to birth control, something that is used by thousands of women everyday. These previous events make me wonder what this news will bring.
In the fall of last year it was revealed that women are more likely to graduate from college, but will still earn 78% of what men earn. This demonstrates the inequality very clearly showing that women can work harder, but still not get equal recognition for their work. It is very interesting to see all of the statistics that come with this new fact. I hope that women continue to fight for equality in society and continue to achieve great things.

This shows how historical images of women are changing dramatically. Many women now are independent, some with families and some who care just for themselves. Women are fully capable of providing for a full family nowadays.
ReplyDeleteThe information is very interesting to see how women have changed over the years. It crazy to think that not even 100 years ago women didn't have the right to vote.
ReplyDeleteSo now i hope feminists quit whining about unequal pay in the workforce. Women have always felt inferrior to men and since the 1920s we have continued to let them act out and take doen traditional societal roles. Where do we draw the line?
