A housewife in Hong Kong has been found guilty of keeping a young Indonesian worker prisoner in her home. The housewife starved her, abused her, and beat her with a range of weapons including a mop and vacuum cleaner. The Indonesian worker's case attracted international attention when she was sent back to Indonesia because she was too ill to work. The housewife pleaded not guilty to 20 charges of assault, criminal intimidation, and failure to pay wages to the 23 year old maid. The only guilty part was failing to buy insurance for the employee.
This relates to APUSH because it kind of reminds me of slavery. She treated the maid as a slave. I can understand that a maid works in your home, but that doesn't mean you become a "master" and treat her like a slave. Even if this event didn't happen in America, I think she should have at least thought her actions through. The maid is a person trying to earn some money to support herself and/or her family and that shouldn't give anyone the right to mistreat anyone.
