New York City had gone 12 days without a homicide, a modern record according to the New York City Police Department. The streak ended late Friday night when a 28 year old man was shot several times before midnight and died Saturday at a nearby hospital.
Despite the record-breaking streak, there has been an increase in shooting incidents as compared to the same time last year. The first week of February this year had 110 shooting incidents, versus 91 in 2014, according to Detective Cheryl Crispin of the NYPD public information office.
It's kind of sad that 12 days is a record for not having a murder; less than 2 weeks is relatively not a long period of time. However, with a metropolis as large as New York City, I guess 12 days is a large amount of time. I wonder what would be an efficient way to reduce crime in urban areas. I think we should target the beginning causes: poverty, and lack of education. This way, children will not grow up thinking crime is the only route to take in life.

I wrote about this article too - I agree that their record is sad yet phenomenal for the city.
