On December 3 in Florida, Kristina Buhrman, an eighth grade math teacher, was substituting as a bus driver for Discovery Academy in Lake Alfred. She began to notice something coming from the back of the bus as she hit the highway, but thought it was only steam from the engine due to cold weather. That's when a student said that there was smoke coming from their seat. Buhrman immediately pulled the bus to the side of the highway, led the 38 students and teacher away from the bus near a ravine, and called 911 just as the bus burst into flames. Nobody was injured in the incident.
It never ceases to amaze me how quickly some people can think and act under such hectic and unusual circumstances. I'm glad that there are so many people out there like her to save lives and react calmly and quickly. I also hope that they find the cause of the bus fire so that they are able to prevent it from happening again.

It was a nice thing the teacher did, I think we all owe her a moment of silence
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. Just a few more seconds on that bus and they'd all be toast. We need more people like that who are quick to act.
ReplyDeleteIt's incredibly lucky that the teacher was able to get all of the students off in time. I also hope that they find the cause of the fire.
ReplyDeleteThis is so refreshing to know that there are people like this still out there. She was very smart and saved all of their lives.
ReplyDeleteThis shows how teachers really develop a special bond with their students and how they don't just do their job for the money.
