Students at NC school sent home coatless- Nina Bharadwaj, 2nd period

Ranson IB Middle School in NC is under attack for sending students home on a cold day without their coats because they did not match the proper uniform, breaking the school's rigid dress code. Chanda Spates, mother of three, claimed that her children came home from school coatless. Spates's kids told her that 20 other kids had been sent home as well without any outerwear for not complying with dress code. In order for students to get their coats back, parents would need to come to the school and pick them up. Spates was rather upset that her kids, in addition to 20 other, had been sent home in 30 degree weather.
The next day, the middle school apologized for its actions. Apparently, an employee had taken coats that did not comply with dress code but had intended to give them back at the end of the school day: however, this did not happen. School officials were very apologetic about this incident and claimed they would make sure that every student received their coat the next day. The employee who did not give the students their coats back has been rightfully punished.

It is really upsetting to know that this middle school left students to travel home in such low temperatures, regardless of the fact that it was unintentional. An incident like this never should have happened because a school that is willing to pinpoint every student that doesn't follow dress code should have the decency to ensure that every coat is returned to each student by the end of the day. Most schools would want to make sure that all students have the proper outerwear when going outside. It is unreasonable that an employee would just forget to return over 20 coats to his or her students. How could one see so many children walk out of the classroom coatless and not have the sense to think about how unusual that is? Whatever the case was, I am just hoping this will never be an issue again.

  1. It's ridiculous that a teacher was willing to let children be exposed to the cold without jackets (especially since it exposes them to viruses, etc.) just to adhere to an arbitrary formality. It's thought that school policies are implemented to help children's safety; however, in this circumstance, that's obviously not the case.

  2. That's just amazing at how many kids went home like that. I mean there are a multitude of schools that won't even let students go outside in weather like that - sending kids home without the proper gear when it's below freezing is something that could really harm them - and as to why the person responsible didn't think of that is astounding.

  3. Teachers are supposed to role models, and this sets an awful example for children. The school is mostly to blame because they should be considering the children's health before the school handbook. Rules aren't always the best solutions, or the best guides for that matter. 4. Its absolutely ridiculous that the school allowed this to happen. The cold is dangerous, causing many people to get very sick. The fact that the appearance of the school mattered more to them than the well being of the children is apalling. Someone needs to have a serious talk with the faculty at this school and explain to them that a school is about the kids and their well being aka keep them warm!!

  5. That's ridiculous! It doesn't even make any sense! It's 30 degrees outside! No one cares what your coat looks like! What I'd a colorful coat going to do to a child besides keep them warm?!
