More than 300 manatees swam into Florida's Three Sisters Springs this week, causing park officials to close the springs to swimmers and kayakers. The Three Sisters Springs, part of the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, are well-known for their warm waters and allow animals like manatees to live safely during the winters while open waters are harmfully cold. Three Sisters Springs is also the only confined-water body in the United States and is open to the public to see the manatees during winter. Though, due to increasing harassment at the springs, the U.S. and Wildlife Service has been considering a policy to restrict access to manatees during winter.
It's so refreshing to read an article about an unusually large amount of an endangered species making an appearance somewhere. I hope that the people that visit manatees during this time are respectful of them and don't harm them in any way that would prevent others from being able to enjoy them.
