This sunday, the remains of unidentified victims killed in the 9/11 terrorist attack are set to be moved to the new September 11 Memorial and Museum just 11 days before the museum is set to open. The remains will be kept behind a wall in the museum with the quote "No day shall erase you from the memory of time" across it. The bodies are said to be moved in a "dignified and respectful manner". However, some victims' families are protesting the move, saying that the bodies are not being laid to rest in an appropriate manner. 17 families have even filed a petition to demand that the museum consult the families before deciding the fate of the remains.
I do think this moving of the bodies was done with good intentions and is a nice place for the bodies to be laid to rest permanently. However, I can definitely see where the backlash by the families is coming from. From the outside, the placing of the bodies in the museum can easily be perceived as slightly commercial and not genuine, seeing that the museum probably charges for entry and whatnot. It seems a bit weird that they're placing the remains of the victims in a museum rather than some sort of memorial completely separate from the museum.

I agree with you. It's good to be honored at the museum but I think the families need the solace
ReplyDeletecomment by rhyann lee I love the idea of the museum but they should have informed the families to see how they felt about it
ReplyDeleteI agree the bodies are being moved for respectable reason but I believe the family's wishes are more important in this matter.

ReplyDeleteIf that bodies are "unidentified" then no one can "legally" claim them; their bodies were too badly burned to be recognizable. I don't really see how 17 families can demand a proper burial for their relative if they can't distinguish one body from another. However, I don't think it's appropriate to put a dead body behind a wall. The unidentified bodies should be buried at a memorial dedicated to 9/11 victims.
Even if the museum has good intention, their decision seems inappropriate in the context of our cultures traditions.
