Polish police say Elżbieta Podleśna put up posters of the Black Madonna that depicted the Virgin Mary and Jesus with rainbows from the LGBT flag as halos. She could face two years in prison for “offending religious feelings.” The poster is strongly opposed in Poland. Her lawyer says that they plan on fighting the charges because the way the paintings were presented didn't publicly insult/desecrate a religious image. "Restricting activists from freely expressing their views in the country is unlawful and must stop immediately," says Amnesty International.
I'm not sure how the law works in Poland, but I know that this would not have been a legal issue in the United States. Our Constitution sets us aside from all other countries in the world. Tha fully, people in America are not arrested for trivial displays such as this. I stand with Amnesty International. This event is, frankly, a bit of a waste of time.

I'm not entirely sure how religious Poland is or the way its legal system works, but I do feel that it is a bit ridiculous to face jail time for putting up a poster that, in my opinion, is harmless. This situation is very alarming, because creative freedom is extremely important for starting discussions and opening doors to new ideas and hopefully more tolerant and accepting thoughts. It's okay to disagree with someone's opinion, but if that person's opinion isn't hurting you, then what's the problem? I do have to say though, I am not a religious person, so the significance of the original image as well as the emotion that goes along with it is lost on me. - Daniella Castanheira
