Samuel Martin - Pentagon Creates Deterrent Against Iran

Pentagon Builds Deterrent Force Against Possible Iranian Attack

Summary
The Department of Defense has created a new defense against possible Iranian attack: a battery of single patriot antimissile apparatus sent to the Middle East. Pentagon officials hope that this will be enough to stop Iran from launching any missiles towards the U.S. This move comes from intelligence last week that Iran was creating proxies in Syria and Iraq to launch missiles towards the United States, all as a move to get our government to overreact. The Defense Secretary says that there will be more, measured moves that we will take like replacing one of the Navy vessels in the area with something newer and quicker, send B-52 bombers to the US Air Base in Qatar. While military planners are being sent to evaluate the situation, it is causing controversy because the whole point of Iran's actions is to get the US to overreact, but if we don't know how we will react to an attack attempts, we will be worse off. This also contradicts President Trump's wishes to bring back many of the deployed troops because if there is conflict, tens of thousands more will be needed there.

Analysis
This article was written in Washington, D.C. on Friday, May 10th, 2019. I already knew that there were rising tensions in Iran because of the oil prices. This relates to U.S. History because during the Cold War both parties, the US and USSR had to keep nuclear and hydrogen bombs to deter each other from making any attacks or decisions. The audience of this article is the American public because they need to be informed on what the government is doing to protect our country. The authors of the article are both national security informants for the NYTimes and have been writing for a combined total of over 20 years. The purpose of this article is to keep citizens informed about the country's foreign policy and actions they are currently taking.
