Recently, Fanny Aizenberg sat down in front of 200 high school students at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum to talk about her experiences. She is a 100-year-old Holocaust survivor who lived through Auschwitz, as well as Nazi medical experimentation and beatings. She also spoke about the current wave of anti-semitism in the nation. In the past few weeks, over 80 Jewish schools and community centers have received bomb threats. Her advice is that you don't have to love everybody, but you shouldn't hate anybody.
The article was written Friday, March 17th, so it's very relevant. Before reading the article, I knew a lot about the Holocaust and how the lives of Jewish people were affected. However, I had no idea that there has been a recent surge of anti-semitism. That's crazy! Reemerging anti-semitism is just a regression of society of about 7 decades. I think this article offers both positive and negative feelings for the reader. It's great to read about living Holocaust survivors because there won't be any soon. At the same time, it's terrible to see how Ms. Aizenberg has not only survived the Holocaust, but now has to deal with hate at 100 years old. This article can obviously be related to the Holocaust, as well as other prejudices throughout history, like segregation and the interment of the Japanese in WWII.

It is important that we have people like this to remind us the realities of history.
ReplyDeleteThe Holocaust was a very dark time in history and I can only hope that that part of history does not repeat itself.
ReplyDeleteIt's awful to see anti-semitic prejudice resurfacing.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad to see that she's coming out and sharing her story and her advice, this is so good, but lets only hope this type of prejudice doesn't get worse!
