Voting equality in Ohio - Katie Schuldenberg

Roland Gilbert, a 86-year-old retired lawyer, filled out and completed his ballot, only to later be told that it was rejected because he mistakenly put the current date in the space for his birth date. Now for any average person, this mistake could've easily occurred, but noting that Mr. Gilbert is legally blind makes the circumstances totally understandable. Though the local election officials did not see it this way.

Although it is understandable that, because of the many ballots that need sifting through and charting, the officials have overlooked these inconveniences, they cannot be neglected completely. I'm sure there have been plenty of citizens that have complaints about the voting system and would gladly speak up if given the chance; mainly those with disabilities. If the handicap have certain needs in order to act their constitutional rights, they should be given those needs and the officials should take more consideration while reviewing their ballots.

  1. Its horrible how someone with a disability is treated unfairly compared to to other people. The system of voting needs to help and have more connivance towards people.

  2. People with disabilities are always forgotten. People forget that they, themselves, are not what everyone is like. Accessibility has always been tough for these individuals, but to think they can't even vote and be treated equally!

  4. People with disabilities are mistreated throughout America. This article calls out the current issue of inequality for those effected with a disability. He should still have an input into our democracy.

  5. It is important that everyone not only has the right to vote for the candidate of their choosing, but the right to choose weather to vote or not, which is also a valid expression of ones political opinion. We need to stop treating the disabled as second class citizens.
