In New Mexico, a 3 year old boy got a hold of his parents .45-caliber Smith and Wesson semi-automatic firearm, shooting and injuring both of his parents. The family lives in an Albuquerque motel room, home to a father, his girlfriend, the son, and his 2 year old sister. The boy was rummaging around the room when he found the gun in his mother's purse which was sitting on top of a mini fridge. The boy mistakenly shot his father in the leg and that billet carried on to shoot his pregnant girlfriend in the shoulder. Both parents were arrested and charged with child abuse and having a fire arm not protected from children. The two children are now in the states custody. Both parents were aware of the guns location, having that it was only purchased earlier that day. The bond for the two is set at $15,000 each.
This is reckless behavior for people with children especially if you live in a smaller environment with such young children. The child who found the gun could have injured himself as well as his sister. The parents had not taken into mind that there is danger when bringing a firearm into the home. I am glad they are under the states protection now because with their parents, they could be put into more danger. Occurrences such as these are why there are laws that require the lock and security of firearms in a home.
