Imagine sitting in the lecture hall of your business psychology class taught by an attractive professor. As he (or she) goes on about how business organizations can be more effective, you notice the cute little thing that they do with their lips while they talk or that little eye twitch when they get nervous. After the class, you go up to them and ask them for "tutoring" just to talk to them and things start escalating from there. This could be considered no big deal to some universities but as of February 5th, Harvard banned any romantic relations between faculty and undergraduate students in the schools of Arts and Sciences, but not in the schools of Law or medicine.
Harvard is not the first school to place this ban either. Other universities such as Yale, the University of Connecticut, and Arizona State University have also voted on making professor-student relationships forbidden on campus. The question of student relationships with faculty has not received much attention in the recent debate about sexual consent and appropriate behavior, but this is Harvard's way of dealing with the hot topic of the time.

I wonder why the ban was only placed on relations in the schools of Arts and Sciences...?
ReplyDeleteThe ban doesn't make sense to me. It would make more sense if they put it on all schools at Harvard but I still don't agree it.
