Popular rapper, Tiny Doo, has been charged with murder in an unsolved case related to gang violence. They believe that since Tiny Doo raps about murder and gang violence (which many popular artists do nowadays), he is eligible as a suspect in this federal case. If convicted, he will face at least 25 years in prison. There is no substantial proof against this man, only the fact that he rhymed words that sound like a common gang related murder.

Analysis: This is in direct violation of the first amendment; freedom of speech. if there is no substantial evidence (i.e. fingerprints, faulty alibi, etc.), they should not be able to limit his freedom of expression and speech. This is related to the Holy Land organization trial also. The Holy Land organization was charged with giving material support to charities and organizations that supported terrorist group, Hammas. Even though there was substantial evidence that this specific person did not support Hammas and did not aid the organization in allegedly supporting Hammas, he was convicted on the fact that his half-brother was the leader of Hammas and that he engaged in pro-Palestinian acting band singing groups and talent groups that have messages that could be taken as supporting Hammas. As a school of artists, we all understand that not everything we express in our particular art form is precisely the message we believe in, yet that is exactly how this man will be put into jail.
We should not have to censor our thoughts in fear of the government punishing us. We were given the right of free speech for a reason.
So true! This is a major lapse of judgement and proper charging of criminals on the government's part. We should absolutely not have to fear being sentenced to prison for voicing our own personal opinions, and the case should be reevaluated, in my opinion. Although care and caution should be taken into account when deciding whether or not to voice outrageous or outlandish opinions (even if one decides to go ahead and voice them anyway), America should honor the constitution that is was founded upon in allowing free speech within our society.

I agree with both of you. It is unjust that this man could be jailed for rapping about a topic that he very well could have fictionally made up. There is no tangible evidence against him, so he should not be put behind bars because of it.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with Sophia. How can one be charged with murder for rapping about the subject? That seems like a direct violation of free speech, unless there is more to the story.
ReplyDeleteSongwriters create pieces that are completely spawned from fantasy. If I wrote a song about me having no legs or arms, or even just sang it, does that necessarily mean I have no legs? If I legitimately had no arms or legs, then you could correlate the two with one another, but since there is no substantial proof against this man, they have no right to accuse him of something due to his practicing of freedom of speech.
