Last week, just up the road from where Michael Brown was fatally shot, another young man was killed the night the jury reached a verdict over the indictment of Darren Wilson. Deandre Joshua, 20, was shot once and set on fire in his car following the jury's refusal to indict Darren Wilson. Once the jury had released their decision, a series of riots and protests took place in Ferguson, with a few groups taking advantage of the situation by setting fire to stores and looting as well as acts of vandalism on vehicles and other property. Last Tuesday morning, Ms. Joshua was watching the local news when she saw reports of a body inside of a white Pontiac in the same area that Michael Brown was killed in. Images on her television revealed a crack in the vehicle's bumped and a missing license plate. Ms. Joshua would go on to say that she "knew it was him." Deandre Joshua was the only fatality from the riots in Ferguson last week.
It's upsetting that this town keeps being shaken by tragedies like this one. Deandre Joshua's death could have been avoided if some of the protesters hadn't taken advantage of Ferguson's volatile state. While the reasoning behind their protests is justified, the reasoning behind vandalism and looting is not. To link this to U.S. history, this reminds me of the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Following the acquittal of several police officers accused of police brutality, the city broke out into a series of riots that lasted 6 days. Fifty-three were killed and over 2,000 were injured as a result of these riots.
I am not even sure this needs comments because I am sure no one thinks looting innocent people's stores and homes will help the situation. I actually cannot fathom what is going through these peoples heads...
